Torpedo Boats.

Hauirax, July 7.

The two torpedo boats towed across the Atlantie by the troopship Tyne, which ar- rived to-day are the tirst of the kind ever seen in British North American waters and are most destructive instruments of modern warfare. They are 125 feet keel and 13 feet in breadth. In shape they resemble a They carry 18 tons of cval and with a speed of 19 knots an hour they can run partly submerged alongside a large warship, place a torpedo in positionf or discharge and get out of harms reach before the warship is aware ofj her presence. The story to the effect that negotiations between the State Department and the British minister, for the settlement of the Behring Sea diflicuity, had come to an abrupt close, aud that Sir Julian Paunce- forte notitied Blaine that if American cut- fl g, the British tleet now assembling at Victuria would receive orders to recapture the ves- el, is absolutely denied by Sir Julien. He says negotiations between Secretary Blaine and himself are still in progress and that indications point to a satisfactory and amic- able settlement of the difliculry.

Haminton, July 7.

At Mount Hope, Ont., Joel Smith, an undertaker, hoisted the stars and stripes over his residence in honor of the Fourth. A deputation of neighboring farmers re- quested its removal, but Smith declinad, whereupon the flag was riddled with bullets and divided amongst the crowd. A second flag was raised by Smith to meet a similar fate. ;

Big Marriage Fee. Toronto, July 7. The biggest marriage fee on the local record was that paid to Archbishop Walsh, who married W. A. Murray to Mrs. Sarah Cawthra. They are two of the wealthiest persons here. The fee was $5,000.
