Tue Tueat Case.—In the Supreme Court, Uttawa, on the 4th, judgment was given in the case of Theal vx. The Queen. The ap- pellant was indited and tried at the St. John | circuit in New Brauswick in November, 1881, cen the indictment containing two counts, one charging the prisoncr with murdering his wife on the 10th November, 1881, and the other With manslaughter of his said wife cn the same day. The grand jury found “‘a true bill.” The prisoner was convicted of man- slaughter. The immediate cause of the wife’s death was acute inflammation of the liver, which the medical testimony proved might be occasioned by a blow or fall against a hard substance. About three weeks before her death the prisoner had knocked his wife down with a bottle. She fell against a door and remained on the floor insensible for some time. She was confined to her bed soon afterwards and never recovered. Evidence was given of frequent acts of violence committed by the prisoner within a year of her death by knock- ing her down and kicking her in the side. The Supreme Court of New Brunswick (Palmer J. dissenting) refused a motion to quash the ia dietment, and held that there was evidence to leave to the jury that ‘“‘the disease, which caused her death, was induced by the injuries inflicted by the prisoner, and that the evi- dence of violence committed within a year of the death was properly received.” The prisoner appealed to the Supreme Court of Canada which unanimously affirmed the decision of the lower court and dismissed the appeal.

Americans are illustrating the truth of proverb that it makes all the difference whose ox is gored. Many journals across the line have termed the Egyptian cam- paign an Egyptian bondholders’ war. Yet we find the Philadelphia Press declaring that ‘‘our Government, at no very distant day, will be called upon to take a stand in the matter of American investments in Mexico. Millions of American eapital is gone and is still going into Mexico. It takes the form there of permanent improve- ments, and is represented on this side of the line by stocks and bonds. Is the United | States going to guarantee this paper by compelling Mexico to maintain good faith with the Americans, whom it has encour- aged to part with their money?” Trouble has arisen in consequence of the Mexican Government having declared the land grant to the Tehuantepec railway, an American enterprise, to have been forfeited, on the ground of non-fulfilment of conditions. it is now urged that the States should act as sheriff's officer for its citizens in Mexico,

The station houses at O'Leary was tho-| dated 30th July, 1881, payable in three

roughly renovated, the Agent's enlarged, and the whole building neatly painted, inside and out, a few weeks ago.

The station house at County Line and Bradalbane have also received similar at tentions, making them the most attractive in appearance of any in their respective locaiities. Alterations and repairs were also made at Hunter River, Royalty Junc tion, Georgetown and Charlottetown sta tions.

The engine house at Tignish, Summer- Georgetown were shingled and otherwise repaired.

The station houses at Mil! River, Rich- mond and New Zealand were moved to positions more convenient for the public,

places, as well as at Barbara Weit, Loyal- ist, Milton, and Royalty Junction.

The platform in front of the station at Charlottetown, has been entirely renewed, and extended about 100 feet at the east end of the building.

During the summer no less than 50,000 s'eepers have been put in the track west of and 42,000 east. The number per mile has been increased from 2200 to 2640, making the Island Road equal in this respect to the finest roads in America.

Eight hundred tons of steel rails were ordered in September last, and it was ex- pected they wonld have arrived here in time to be laid this fall. Butin consequence of the difficulty in procuring vessels in Liverpool, only about eighty tons have as yet been received, having been shipped by

steamer to Boston and thence per Boston | and Colonial Steamship Line to Charlotte- |

town. The balance are now afloat and expected daily. Notwithstanding the late- ness of the season, it is likely that about a mile will yet be laid,

Eight hundred car loads of ballast have been distributed on the Western Division, and 500 on the Eastern where most re- quired, while a large amount of diiching has been done.

In the neighborhood of twelve miles of Barbed wire-fencing, and four iniles of pole fencing have been erected ; in addition to which half a mile of the ordinary rail fence has been constructed.

The heavy storms of last winter having demonstrated the fact that the the snow- fence as originally built along the line, was in many cases tog close to the track, upwards of two and a half miles of it have been cemoved, and placed from twenty to forty feet back from the original boundary line of the railway.

Forty cattle guards have been re-built, and seven additional ones provided. The number of road crossings, public and private, on the line now exceeds one thous- and, an average of over five to the mile.

The wooden tops of the bridges at Mil- ton and St. Nicholas have been renewed, and extensive repairs have been made to the masonry of all bridges and culverts where required.

New sidings for the accomodation of traffic and convenience of the public have been provided at Northam, Summerside, Morell, and atthe Starch factories at Mt. Stewart and St. Peter’s ; while the sidings at Portage, Miscouche and Charlottetown have been lengtheued to meet the increasing traflic at these points.

A foundation of crib-work 275 feet long and 25 feet wide was built under the coal shed at Charlottetown ; the worms having almost entirely destreyed the piles upon which the shed was first built, rendering it unsate. At Summerside wharf extensive repairs were also required from a similar cause.

Additional ‘“‘ Haggas” tanks have been supplied where necessary ; the most useful perhaps on the Line, being located at the corner of Water and Prince Streets, near the Round House, Charlottetown. The railway authorities have arranged so that it can be utilized by the City Fire Depart- ment when desired. In connection with this a powerful steam pump has been placed in the Round House capable of throwing water over any of the railway buildings in the Ci.y.

Since the middle of ‘uly last, the con-

struction of some fifty freight cars in the | railway shops has given employment to a|

large number of mechanics. The work- menship on these cars is said, by compe- tent judges, to be equal, if not superior, to anything of the kind in the Dominion.

A number of the passenger cars have|

been furnished with larger and stronger trucks, and we understand the train which will be run in connection with the ‘‘ Northern Light” this winter, will be equipped with steel tired wheels— the first ever used under cars on the road.

Four new and powerful Jocomotives, manufactured by the Canadian Locomotive and Engine Company, Kingston, were landed at the Railway Wharf here, a few weeks ago. These engines are of the latest pattern, and have all the modern im- provements. Three of them are already in dai'y use upon the rood, and giving excel-| lent satisfaction.

Caledoria Notes.

Mr. Malcolm Stewart, merchant, of this place, met with a serious accident a few days ago. While attempting to descend from his barn loft he missed his step, fell, and broke his leg. A few days after, Mr. Donald McPherson, blacksmith, of Murray Harbor Road, fell from the staging of a new barn, belonging to Mr. William Mce- Pherson, of Caledonia. The fall resulted in the fracture of one of his limbs, and the infliction of other serious injuries to his lbody. Roth are doing well under the treatment of Dr. McIntosh.

A little son of John McDonald, farmer, | while driving his father’s horses to water a few days ago, was kicked so badly in the forehead by one of the animals, as to ren- der medical aid necessary. Dr. McIntosh |was summoned. It was soon discovered that the bone ef the forehead was frac- tured; but good hopes are entertained of his | recevery.

Diphtheria is doing its work in the neigh- boring districts, and the people of Cale- donia are living in awe of the dreaded monster. May it not make its unwelcome appearance,

Tue Jntercolonial of Emerson, Man., refers to the promotion of Mr. L. T. Owen, lately of Cardigan, as fullows:—

“Mr. L. T. Owen, recently connected with the Winnipeg office of the C. P. R., has been appointed Agent for Emerson and St. Vincent, with head-quarters here and will have both offices under his management in the future. This will be a considerable cunven- ience to business men in both places. Mr. Owen is an experienced, energetic and efficient officer, and under his management some causes of complaint which have existed, will no doubt be removed.”

We are pleased to note that Mr. Owen is prospering in the West.

We take tbe latter plan and article, and observe too that Right Rev. Bishop Gilmour indorses the remedy.

Should he be elivated, Bishop Mackarness, of Oxford, brother-in- law of Lord Coleridge, to whom Mr. Gled- stone gave a mitre in 1869 as a reward for his staunch approval of disestablisement in {reland, will probably be translated to the See of Winchester, and Archdeacon Palmer the youngest brother of Lord Chancellor Selborne a very accomplished classical scholar, will sueceed him as Bishop of Oxford.
