Spirits Dip Ir.—The will of William Henry Livingston, bequeathing $100,000 to his bro- ther-in-law to the exclusion of, his brothers and sisters, was admitted to probate in the Essex county, N. S., orphans’ court, on Mon- day. His collateral relatives had contested the will on the ground that he had been in fluenced in drawing the instrument by the departed spirit of his wife, with which he claimed to have communicated.

Or Inrenest To \Vomen.—Mrs. Hugh Mce- Mullen, of Truro, 66 years old, has a piece of knitting performed by her during the past winter, ‘Lhe work is of the nature of a bed spread, and is beautifully designed in squares, with raised leaves. There are 25 squares in the spread, each square having been knitted in four separate pieces, the several sections con- taining nine leaves, or 56 leaves to a square. The total number of leaves is 900. Thirty balls of No. 12 cotton were used.

Gave cp Smoxine.—A resident of the Parish of Moncton was in town yesterday, gays the Times, looking hale and hearty, not- withstanding his 60 odd years. In the course éf conversation the subject of smoking came up, when the old resident ssid he commenced smoking at 5 years of age, smoked 55 years, gave it up in the summer of 1886, after a severe i loess, and has not smoked since. He had been an inveterate smoker, but was not aware that it had injured him in any way.

Provinctst, Drrecrory,—We understand that Frederick's Pubiishing Co. are meeting with much encouragement in their work of getting up a Provincial Directory. The firm are sparing ao trouble or expense to make the work a success. They have some fifteen men employed canvassing the Island for subscrip- tions, advertisements, etc., and feel confident that the work will be well performed, and that the information the Directory will con. tain can always be ‘relied upon. The book will contain some seven or eight hundred pages, and will be sald at the rate of $2 per g»py. The adyertising rates are reasonable. The firm have their otfice in MacKachern’s Building, Queen Street, where they will be

leased to see any person desirous of assisting the work by advertising or subscribing.

Istaxp Horses.—W. F. Glidden re- turned from P. E. Island, Saturday, with 14 horses, all of which are fine animals. He had three nicely matched pairs of more than ordin- ary beauty and form. This is the second lot of horses that Mr. Glidden has brought from the [sland since the boats commenced a regular traffic, and he had little more than got them in his stables before he began to sell them out again. Several were disposed of the first day. — Woodstock Press.

Mr. James Keegan has thirty-eight good- looking herses for the American market, which he intends shipping via train to Summerside to-morrow. Among the num- ber is the well-known trotter Scott Act, which he purchased from the owner, Mr. Dunphy, of Mill View, for the sum of $150.

Mr. Robert Pagsley, of Amherst, has sold his valuable mare to George O’Brien, Macan, for a good price—believed to be about $400. She is four years old, 16 hands high, stylish, and shows 4 forty clip. She was sired by Dr. Jenkins’ Hambeltoaian, P. E. L., and was purchased b; Mr. Pugsley, who

SUMMARY OF PROCEEDINGS.

Hauirax, June 13.

The Quebec express which was six hours tate to-day brought five sleepers crowded with delegates to the Presbyterian General Assembly. The city of Halifax extended no formal welcome and did nothing to show that it took the slightest interest in the great gathering. The delegates are being entertained by Presbyterian families and will receive due attention from private citizens.

The assembly met in St. Matthew’s Church, which was crowded, some three hundred delegates being in attendance,

Dr, Burns, retiring Moderator, preached the sermon. After the conclusion of his elaborate discourse, the roll was called and the assembly proceeded to elect a Moder- ator.

On motion of Rev. Dr. Reid, Rev. W. T. McMullen, of Woodstock, Ont., was the unanimous choice. Dr. McMullen is the first representative of the Irish wing of Preshyterianism in Canada honored by elec tion to the Moderatorship,

Committees were appointed, and after other routine the Seredunt adjourned.

At a meeting of the Cabinet to-day, Senator Schultz was appointed Lieut.-Gov- ernor of Manitoba, the appointment to date from July Ist.

It is understood the Government intend placing a fishery cruiser on the Georgian Bay to look after American poachers.

The Newfield has been ordered to pro- ceed shortly to Cape Race, to repair the fog whistle, and will also repair the cable at Magdalen Islands.

A London special states that the Imper- ial Federation memorial haa been laid be- fore the Colonial Secretary. Lord Knuts- ford has expressed the opinion that the initiative should be taken by the Canadian Government to secure the proposed con- ference,

A Sad Suicide.

Monrreat, June 13.

A young man named Leclerc, belonging to Toronto, who, with his newly-married wife, was a passenger on the Corinthian, jamped overboard at the head of Long Sauit Rapids and was drowned. His wife is frantic with grief, and was taken care of by friends here on the arrival of the boat. hey were on their way to Paris, France, to spend their honeymoon. No reason can be assigned for the rash act.

Welcoming Lord Stanley.

Qugpec, June 13. Lord Stanley was received with enthusiasm to-day. Three thousand people assembled on Dufferin Terrace where Mayor Langlier presented an address of welcome, to which His Excellency replied in appropriate terms. The vice-regal party will stay at the citidel till next Wednesday, going thence to Metapedia. The Sick Emperor. Porspam, June 13. The Emperor's general condition is com- paratively satisfactory. He is able to take some svlid food without resorting to the tube. The doctors are hopeful that he will maintain his strength for some time. The Emperor receiyed the King of Sweden sitting on the garden terrace.

The SupremeCourt judges are indoubt as to their power to deliver judgments in cases which were argued when the late Judge Henry was on the bench. They will decide the question to-morrow, and it is considered probable that all cases now standing for judgment, will have to be re- argued.

Disastrous Fire.

Hareax, June 13.

The gold niining settlement of Rawdon, Hants, Co., was cremated to-day by fires which started in the woods. Seventeen dwellings, D. A. McDonald’s store, the company’s office, the. crusher and posting gear of the Eastera works, etc., were de- stroyed. Loss $30,000.

Plumbers to Strike.

The journeymen Plumbers Union, num- bering over 100 men, has decided to go out on strike to-morrow morning owing to the employers refusing to grant an increase in wages. The Bricklayers Union to-night voted $400 for the assistance of their strik- ing brethren.

Steamer Overdue.

Lonpon, June 13. A despatch from Jeddah says the Ger man steamer Pempose, from Singapore with 1100 pilgrims on board, on their way to Mecca is overdue at Jeddah and is sup- posed to be lost.
