German planes flew over the British East Coast at five points in the second day of intensive aerial activity. The sound of anti-aircraft gunfire was heard in London as one raider was given a warm reception over the Thames Estuary.

N0 bombs were dropped on land. The German scouting planes flew over Lond0n’s outskirts, the southeast coast and the Suffolk, Norfolk and Yorkshire coasts. They were quickly forced back to sea by British anti-air- craft fire and pursuit planes.

Today was the 47th birth- day of Germany’s air minis- ter, Field Marshal Hermann Goering, and the press here described the raids as his “celebration? They called them a “flop."

Over the Thames three British spitflres struck from the clouds at a lone raider which appeared to have been hit and was last seen trailing smoke and heading out to sea with the chaser planes in pursuit. Persons on the Kent and Essex sides of the Estuary saw ti'.e_ fight, with anti-aircraft. shells bursting near the raider.

The plane which reached tile Buffolk coast was o Heinkel. An- other Hclnkel flew over Yorkshire. A Dornier “flying pencil," a bi- motored bomber with an unusual- ly long and narrow fuselage, was seen near the Norflok coast. She was believed to_be a mine-sowcr.
