The story of the Cooper family is unparalleled in pioneer history. 1t is stranger than fiction. but shows the courage and , spec of these early pioneers who paved the way to viilaat-ion for us who followed after them.

From llngland to Prince tqmmi Island and thence to Humboldt County la I. far cry. but auoh is the path chosen by the first members of this heroic family. on November 4. H17. William cooper was born in En8lI!ld- lit the age of eleven he ran away from home and mm, to SCI. shipping as a cabin boy. Lam- he joined the British Navy and was with Lord Nelson at Trafalgar. fie became a see. captain and paired the seven sees. in the course or his travels he went to Prince lldwiu-d Island. Arriving there he decided to

As he had a fairly good edu- cation he soon was appointed by the government to several p0sltion5_ such as magistrate. postmaster, and supervisor. Later he was elected to the Legislature where he served mull’ terms. His portrait adorns the wall in the Assembly Hall gt Charlottetown at the present time. As a sea captain he had gomg knowledge of medicine and surgery, and thus beheceme the doctor for a large expanse of country. Later he owned or controlled a number of vessels which plied between the Island and the British Isles. He also established a store where he was able to hel all the settlers at that early perio of the Island’: history.

As the years went by he raised a large family of boys ma 51:15, The older boys were of great as- sistanoe to their father in his many enterprises. but they were always l°°l<lll8 for something more excit- ing than running a. farm or keeping store. 80 in 1849 when gold was dis- covered in California. they became enthusiastic about the idea of join- llli: the bold hunters. but the father was not willing for his boys to undertake the hardships of cross. in: the plains in the “Covered \VnRon". After deliberating for a long time and holding many coun- cils. they decided they would all go to California. However, they. would not I0 by the covered wagon trail, but in their own ship.

As none of his ships were sult- nhle for such a voyage, Mr. Cooper decided to build a vessel that he knew would “weather the Cape" nnd take him and his family safely throush. for there was no Panama Canal in those days. I will state here that Mr. George Chafey. the veteran blacksmith and wagon maker of Alliance, near Arcsta in Humboldt County. then a young man living at Grand River. worked on the vessel. The vessel was built extra strong with two keels and copper shected with two keel: and November. 1549. she was launched and made ready for her long voy- age. Mr. Cooper then loaded his vessel with such things as he thought they would need on the voyailc and also material that would be needed in their new home in califomla. some of the things be slowed in board his ship were a. hundred tons of coal. lumber enougii to build several houses. seed of all kinds. Then the contents of his store was stowed away and all the livestock that could be taken care of. including a. cow. About the first of December. 1840 they set. sail from souris. Prince Edward Island, for Califonrla, Mr. Cooper as captain. With all his family and a. number of pasengers. the ship carried about twenty-six people. After a long but. uneventful voyage they arrived in July 1850. in San Fran- cisco Bay. where they dropped anchor for the first time in seven months. They had hoped that when they arrived in California they could sell from one part to another until they icund is place suitable for farmml and stock raising. for‘ they wished to follow that occupation rather than gold mining. But they found upon reaching San Fraxiciseo that a foreign vexael could not move about without a. custom house of- ficer on board. at a cost of from seven to ten dollars per day. of course that was out of the question: so they held a ooiincil of war and decided to unload the ship, sell what they could of the cargo that they would not need, and store such things as seed anti agricultural implements, furniture. etc.. and sell the vessel. This they did. bid ships in San Francisco Bay at that time were something like they are in the Estuary today away below par. 30 the good stout packet was sold for about one-third of her value. The coal brought a. good price. however. which partly made up for the loss on the ship.

Mother's Day has been observed for many years in Engiiand. The ancient term applied to this glad day of l‘€Hl9n1bI‘al’lC6 was "Mother- ing Sunday." the fourth Sunday in Lent. From near and far the children returned to the tl_iatch roofed cottage or stately mansion carrying a "eimnel cake." All mm- bers of the family united in praise to God in the parish church. and on returning home there was 9. least and a happy reunion. Arlemus Ward tells us that "Simnel cake” resembles meet P18 in appearance. but its composition is very closely akin to a rich Plum pudding.

In 1907, Miss Anna Jarvis popu- larised Mother's Day by wearlne a white camatlon in honor of her mother whose death she was com- memoi-atlng. she wrote thousands of letters to people whom she hm!- ed would share her enthusiasm in making this day a national holl- dly. The following year, great was me joy of thig modest little per- son when in Philadelphia. her home city, and also in many other towns. there was a general obser- vance of Mothers Day—“dedlcat.ed to the best mother in the world—— your Mother."

The world is full of wonderful mothers. But too often the pres- sure of home duties or outside ac- tivities prevents them from reveal- ing their best points. Children do noi, care about the cleverness of their parents. The happiest mem- ories of childhood are closely asso- ciated with the spicy frssrance ol cakes. delectable morsels popped into childish mouths puckered ill anticipation of the treat. These are the great moments in life.

Later, we appreciate the quiet sacrifice. the hours of loneliness. the disappointnients they have suf- fered through thwarted ambition. And then we sing with the un- knovm poet:——-
