The main course should in- clude a satisfying serving of lean meat. fish or fowl. broiled. no gravy. A small baked potato with a half pet of butter is high in satiety value. The other veget- able can be a dark green leafy or yellow variety. The dessert should be tunple. but should al- ways be included . a fruit whip using egg whites, a favor- ite fresh fruit. a serving of frozen limit with a tablespoon of ice cream. or angel food cake.

From 'I to 0. normal calorie requirements are D00 daily. on 1300 calories. this young over- weight will lose and have suffici- ent food to feel well satisfied.

It is a good plan to cut out one fattening dish at a time. At breakfast. the jelly and extra slice of toast can be deleted. The luncheon sandwich can have a lhlCl( filling of lean meat. cheese or egg. but a thin spread of mayonnaise or butter. When luiii-hing at home. hot cocoa made with skim milk and a non-nutritive sweetener is a treat. A late after- noon pick-up is needed, such as milk. cocoa or fruit.

This summer our young lady might be encouraged to enroll in dancing school. Any new active interest . . . . bicycling, skating. perhaps a pet dog to romp with will prove helpful.

The April meeting of the Spring- vale W. l.. was held at the home of Mrs Herbert Dollar on Vlarch 31st. The. president opened the meeting with the Ode. followed by the Creed in unison and silent prayer. The minutes of the March meeting were read and signed. Twelve members answered roll call with "a cup for the school." There was one visitor and one new member welcomed. p

Business arising from the min- utes was discussed. Miss Erna Colea reported that Gideon Bibles had been received and presented to several of the school children.

Social changes have caused young women to flock to university. Of course many of these girls do not finish. they iriarry. But it is not rare among those growing numbers of student couples to find them both continuing their studies. But the arrival of a child naturally com- plicstes matters. Furthermore. the proletarlanizatlon of the middle classes has become more mark- ed. The girl without a dowry and Just a coating of the social graces can no longer be matched with the young men whose tradi- tional career was mapped out a- head. The struggle for existence

What Do French Girls Dream?

since there are more women than men. There are more women vot- ing in France than men. but this phenomenon is not characteristic of France alone. So girls are com- pelled to win their independence. This means that for them the struggle for existence becomes real conflict between the sexes.

They have courageously taken up the challenge. however. and often turn out to be the victors. .for have they not won the right of entry to positions hithern cloa- ed to them? The Council of State and the Audit Office have accept- ed them after the recent final competltltive examination of the School for Administrative Officers. when they came among the first in the passing-out list.

This influx of men and women students is also due A and this is gratifying to what might be termed the rise of the proletariat. Young women as well as young men who have completed ele- mentary studles aspire to a bet- ter fate than that of their par- ents who. for their part. are on- tirely in agieement. The life ahead of these young people is no easy one, of course. but is it harder than the one they would normal- ly have led? At the same time. especially in Paris. there is great congestion. which is not without dire consequences. Endeavours are therefore being made to de- centralise the university. some provincial universities being far less crowded than the capital, which has spread monstrously.

These large numbers of young women create another problem. What is to become of these ranks of women students? What outlets
