The Old Tramp. BY DELL. ee Good morniti’; boys, and how is “‘biz:” Ima seedy-looking tramp, You see, last night my ‘“‘little bed” was just 4 trifle damp. ‘ I missed the train—that’s funny, ,too—and then I walked the rail ; I found my bed, as I always do, when inn connections fail.

Last night I dreamt a dream, and I wish [had never woke —

Yes, boys, I dreamt I lived again before I took this yoke ;

I saw the forms of other days --they’ve climbed the golden hill;

{ mingled with a homely throng were so still.

I wish it

'f'was a banquet spread in that old home, and all were gathered there

‘To crowd around the festal board—parental

lessings share ;

You see I hved my life again. O happy days so bright!

As I slept in my dew-damp bed in the shad- ows of last night.

A poor tramp printer has a heart beneath his rugged garh,

‘*Hard ‘limes” is roaming thro’ the land, and we have feit his barb;

And, strangers, when I woke this morn, with cramps and mental pain,

May God forgive my wicked wish--to never wake again,

_‘T’ve made some ‘‘justification” in the ancient, battered ‘‘ form,”

And my ‘‘benzine” wash I’ve thrown aside, it’s brought to me much harm ;

My ‘‘proof” has been ‘‘corrected,” a ‘‘ revise” will needed be,

For he that searcheth hearts will many errors see

My tramp is almost ended now—old age will win the race.

You see my hands are ‘‘trembly” and I can- not hold a case ;

But I’ve made an application at the ‘‘city built of gold,”

And I long to hear the answer: ‘’Tis a case that you can hold.”

A Droll Biunder.

A doctor who had one day allowed himself to drink too much, was sent for to see a fashionable lady who was ail- ing. He sat down by the bedside, took out his watch, and began to count her pulse as well as his obfuscated condition would permit. He counted: ‘One, two, three ;’ then he got confused, and began again: ‘One, two, three, four.’ Suill confused, he began again: ‘One, two.’ No, he cculd not do it. Thoroughly ashamed of himself, he shut up his watch muttering: ‘ Tipsy, I declare— tipsy !’ Staggering to his feet, he told the lady to keep her bed and take some hot lemonade, to throw her in a per- spiration, and he would see her next day. In the morning he received the following note from the lady, marked ‘ private :’

“Dear Doctor: You were right. I dare not deny it. But I am thorougly ashamed of myself, and will be more carefal in the future. Please accept the enclosed fee for your visit” (a ten

und note) “and do not, I entreat you, breathe au word about the state in which you found.”

The lady, in fact, had been drinking too much, and catching the doctor's murmured words, thought they re- ferred to her. He was too far gone to seo what was the matter with his patient, and she too far to observe that the doctor was in the same condition.

A Tender Husband.

When the news of the steamer Ad- elphi’s explosion reached Danbury, a citizen, whose wife had sailed from New York that morning by way of the boat, took the first train for Norwalk. They had never at the best been a very loving couple, but they were eminently respectable. He had pursued his way and she had gone hers, each finding

leasure in charactoristic channels.

ut now with the presence of her death upon him, and during that long and dreary ride to the sea-side his thoughts were busy with the past. He could re- call with painful distinctness every slight he had offered her, every cross word he had given her, every coldness he had shown her. All the little acts governed by petty selfishness of which he had been guilty, and which had passed from his memory in the doing, now rose up before him as deed of mon- trosity at whose presence his heart sank trembling away.

As tho last train reach: d Norwalk he hurried out on his wretched search, asking here and there for intelligence of her, his white lips and trembling frame testifying most eloquently to his anxiety. At last his search was re- warded and he found her. Not among the dead and mutilated but alive and unharmed. It was a happy meeting— not demonstrative, becanse both were sorely out of practice in that, but he was relieved of a terrible weight on finding her as he did.

‘So you are all right?’ he said.

‘Yes,’ sho answered; ‘lain’t hurta bit, but I was terribly frightened.’

‘You must have been—horribly so. It was a terribly narrow escape. Where's your satchel ?’

‘Idon’t know. I think it must have blown overboard.’

‘ Didn’t you have it with you?’
