We have Jno doubt they would feel better themselves and contribute much more to the success of the Carnival. The same remarks apply to the Salvage Corps boys, the Sailors, the Sports—-and by the way some of the latter appeared to be badly “broken” — the pages, etc. Some of the male characters were as far removed from what they should be as it was possible to have them, For instance, two young men, attired more like coal-heavers than prize-fighters, were labeled **John L.” and ‘Paddy R.” If either John L. or Paddy R. were present last night, these two worthies would have been short-lived. The habit which many of our skaters haveof appearing inthe samecos- tume year after year, but under a different iaume each time, is alsoto be deprecated. Chesefpeopls do not deceive the spectators, but only make themselves ridiculous. fuey should remember that a change of costume is as necessary as a change of name. the fact of se much ** swapping” of cos- tumes going on among the akaters, is a creat drawback to the success of the average Carnival, as it does away, to a large extent, with the introducing of new snd novel features. James Wetmore, one of the survisors of the Wellington mine disaster, says the ex: plosion extinguished all the lights in ths mine. Accompanied by 11 of his comrades Wetmore groped about in the darkness anc stifling afterdamp. After wandering about the chambers for half an hour or more, al! laid down to die. At last all succumbed but Wetmore, whose lusty shouts attracted the rescuing party. It is estimated 90 miners lost their lives in the pit. Michael Lyons was blown 700 feet from the. shaft. His eyes are gone and one arm was torn from its socket, Hobart Combden was leading a gang of men ont of the pit after the explosion when all were strutk by a wave of after-damp and killed. Two sturdy young men, supposed to be brothers, were found ina tight embrace of death. The mine is filled with after-damp, and more explosions are feared. Some bodies cannot be reached, as they are under tons of coal and timber.

The Postal Conference.

Wasuineton, Jan. 26. The President to-day approved of the Postal Convention recently concluded be- tween the United States and Canada. By this, articles of every kind or nature are admitted to the domestic mails of either country, to be admitted at the same rates of postage and under the same conditions and classificatious of mails éxchanged be- tween the two countries, except articles vther than letters, in the usual form, are excluded from the mails unless so wrapped as to permit the contents tc be easily ex-

amined by postmasters or custom officers.

A Coal Steal. SRINGFIELD, Vhio, Jan. 26.

An extensive systematic coal steal has been discovered at Bainbridge, Ross Co. A carload of coal would at times disappear in a single night. The peculations were so extensive that the company employed de- tectives. The result was the arrest of 15 prominent citizens, including the marshal, hotel proprietors and rainister. The de- tectives say half the people in town are im- plicated. Peculations amount to many hundreds of dollars.

Big Snow Fall. Boston, Jan. 26.

From 12 to 20 inches of show has fallen all over New England the past 24 hours. A terrible gale was blowing all day, and is still raging. The drifts in the back country are 10 feet deep, and hundreds of feet long. Trains on the trunk lines are two to twelve hours late. In Maine, New ; Hampshire and Vermont railroad trafic is partially sus- pended on the main lines, and entirely sus- pended on the branches. Highways are generally impassible.

Election Trial. Cayuaca, Jan. 26. At the Haldimand election trial to-day, all the remaining charges of corrupt practices were dismissed, and the investiga- tion of alleged irregularities by the Deputy Returning Officer was begun. The scrutiny stands postponed till after the investigation.

Gone Across. Toronto, Jan. 26. Cashier Allen, of the Central Bank, has taken his departure for the United States. His examination was to have been resumed at 2 o’clock this p. m. His Ceparture has caused a great sensation.
