Mrs. Cotton. several times club champion and once Provinciab titleholder, assumed a giant-killing role yesterday afternoon when she . disposed of the smooth-stroking‘ Cairine Wilson in a tense, nerve- tingling struggle that saw the two ' players go 21 holes before the ls- i, sue was decided. That Mrs. Cot- ton deserved her victory goes without saying. as she came back from the brink of elimination in the final stages of regulation play to make a remarkable recovery and prove the steadler when the chips were down with every stroke taken.

It was a struggle between two real champions, a match fraught with uncertainty right from the outset, a match that could have gone either way and finally and probably most important, a match that saw the highest cf sports- manship dispiayed between two lady golfers who yesterday were on a par in every ‘department of the game.

The same could be said of the other semi-final match between Miss Barbara Trites, Nova Scotia champion, and Mrs. Blair Gordon. This was another tense, nerve- wrecking struggle that went right to the final hole before being de- clded. And with the decision go- ing to Mrs. Gordon the second Provincial champion went down to defeat just minutes before Mrs. Cotton had “'01! her way into the finals.

All four finalists have played better golf before but the close- ness of the two matches made up for any lack of golfiing finesse. A strong wind had a hampering ef- fect. especially from a driving standpoint. but.in the approach- ing and putting tests all came through with splendid displays.

Today's final, over a gruelling {id-hole distance, should be a close struggle all the way. Both ladies are capable of playing fine golf; both are tournament-tested, and it could be that the breaks might ultimately be the deciding factor in determining the 1949 tillehcld- er. ' ‘

Although failing to win the club championship, Abbies track and field squad have every reason to be proud cf their showing in the Highland Games staged recently at Antigonish. With the best of the Maritimes represented in both junior and senior events the local track and field stars were pitted against tough competition and the manner in which they came through is a credit to their abil- ity.

Breaking up a scoreless ball game with five big runs in the first half of the eighth frame, the hustling Vic Juniors defeated the Kinsmen juniors by the score of 5-1 in a thrill packed Junior League encounter played last night before a large crowd of fans

Bottling scoreless for the first seven innings the teams turned in the best Junior League effort of the season in a game that produc- ed air tight pitching and good fielding.

Ev Beagan and Jack Calms, the starting pitchers, were in com- plete control of the game fcr the first seven frames. Butin the fatal eighth inning the blow-up came. With one out, Trainer singled, go- ing to second on a passed ball. I-Ie came home minutes later as Eddy Lund, the League's leading hitter walloped a double into right field. Stull and Shepherd were safe at first on infield errors. McCallum were in. Hcwatt popped out but Reagan kept the rally going by singling and driving another run across the plate. Hughes popped out to end the frame.

In the Kinsmen half of the same inning they put up s. spirited bat- tle but with runners on second and third Beagan bore down to strike out the seventh batter of the inn- ing and put. out the fire.

Beagan, the winning pitcher was touched for seven hits with two or three being of the soft variety. I-le walked five and whlffed nine. Cairns on the other hand allow- ed the same number but poor sup- port by his infield cost him the game in the eighth frame. He walked one batter and sent four back to the bench via the strike- out route.

Leading hitter for the night was the losers‘ Joe Ccyle who had a two for three night. Kennedy had two fcr four for the Kinsmen. Des Trainer, Arnold McCsllum, and pitcher Ev Beagan were the lead- ing hitters for the winners as each clouted out two hits in four times at the plate. In a stunning upset to a meet that followed its expected pre- nament pattern up to the semi-finals. two Provincial cham- pions, Miss Cairine Wilson of the Algonquin Club, St. Andrew's, and Miss Barbara Trites of Bridge- water. N.S., were shunted to the sidelines.

Mrs. W. E. Cotton, the acme of steadiness all the way, defeated Miss Wilson on the 21st hole while Mrs. Gordon was winning from Miss Trltes on the 18th by sinking a par four.

Both finalists. less favored in the draw. won on their merits as both came from behind to enter the 36-hole championship final which will be played today over the Belvedere course of the Char- lottetown Golf Club.
