The birth of a Prince, especially one who ls second in line to the British throne, is a mat- ter of universal interest and of general re1oic- lng throughout the realm. In the case of the son born yesterday to Princess Elizabeth and the Duke‘ of Edinburgh, there is more than the traditional enthusiasm, for both parents are popular favorites and have endeared themselves to all classes by their gracious manners and unassuming ways. Their wedding last year in Westminster Abbey, with all the pomp and cere- mony attending upon it, was the outcome of an old-fashioned love match, and it was this fact. and the devotion of the young couple to each sther and to the duties and responsibilities they were assuming, which captivated all hearts.

As announced elsewhere in today's issue, the final selection of a site for the Propvied sew Dominion Government building has been made, and it is hoped that no further delay will occur in getting the work under way. The site is the block bounded by Queen, Richmond, Powri- al and Sydney Streets, which has the advan- tage of being situated within o stonethrow, al- most, of the Market Square. With all the Do- minion offices situated in this area. find the area itself rebuilt and beautified in accordance with Federal plans, the appearance of this sec- tion of the city will be very materially improv- ed.

lnltial cost of the building is $l,000,000, but it is unlikely that this estimate will cover all requirements. The Post Office is to be in- cluded, which means that the old Post Office building will be available for the Provincial Gov- ernment, if it so desires; Some time ago Premier lones indicated that this building might be ser- viceable for a provincial museum and other pur- poses. In any case, it is too good a structure to be demolished or left vacant.

it is to be hoped that the Dominion build- lng plans include adequate parking space for cars, thus relieving instead of adding to the congestion already noticeable in this area.

Liberal llomment

ln spite of the general sarcasm that has been vented on the proiect, the Government has really gone ahead in its over-inquisitive scheme to find out precisely what Canadians do with their spare cash, after the Minister of Finance has taken his quota. A 24-page illustrated book- let, asking 864 personal questions has gone out to lS,000 selected families in different parts of the country. The questions are for every mem- ber of the family, right down to the small boy, who is expected‘ to remem‘ precisely what he spent during the past year on ice-cream and peanuts. The ladies have 39 questions to answer regarding their expenditures on personal g|amori- zation, while the intimate habits of the men- folk are investigated through interrogations re- garding tobacco, liquor and other indulgencos.

"This,", comments the Halifax Chronicle, ilLiberall "is the most amazing way of obtaining information to be devised in a democratic coun- try in modern times. One would have thought it might have been easier to obtain most of the in- formation requested from selling agencies. Cer- tainly this intrusion of a governmental ques- tionnaire into the arcana of the home is a de- plorable piece of impudence. lt may well be ex- pected that many of these interrogatory booklets will find themselves back on the desk of the sender before long, marked with the letters MYOB --Mind Your Own Business."

The Butter Shortage

Anticipating that the Dominion Government may be "rash enough to permit margarine to be sold in Canada, and take a chance with the farm vote," the Port Erie Times-Review offers the following timely comments on the subject:

lt is quite possible that Canada may be able to buy margarine, since, after all, this is one of the richest, countries in the world, and can certainly get a supply of fats to make mar- garine, even if that leaves poorer countries short. The fact is, however, that margarine is merely a temporary solution of what is becom- ing a very serious problem- lt is not a case of n shortage of butter only. It is a question of a shortage of milk, and that means, in the end, o shortage of cheese, ice cream, condensed milk, cream, and fluid milk.

Butter production is falling because the milk output is falling. In the first six months of this year, production of milk was down more than 3 per cent compared with the first six months of last year, and, while floods in Brit- ish .Columbia did some damage, there was, in general, as good weather this year as last year.

One striking fact is that the amount of milk used for ice cream, candy and other luxury rticles, went up, while the volume of milk used or butter and cheese" went down. The Socialists always soy that-they will solve all economic problems by planning. It would be most interest- lng to get evbn a vague idea from them about whor they would do In this case.

Congratulations are due -Professor Blanch- ard on his appointment to the Ottawa Federal Commission. He will prove a most efficient and industrious member. He is the second member or ex-member of Prince of Wales Faculty to be honoured by recognitiirn in this way, Principal G. D. Steele having been a director of C. B. C. for some time.

Over in England recently. an all-Labour Congress was held at which a fraternal delegate from Ontario told of ihc high-handed labour leg- islation passed lierr: some time ago and declared that Prince Edward Island is "the blackcst spot. on the world's labour union map." 1t was feared the delegate would suggest that this Province be expelled from the British Commonwealth af Na- tions. That, of course, would be going too fur in punishing the guilt of one man and lis party. This, above mentioned. was safe legislation. ‘Fhcrc could be no licavy political kick-back from lab- our in this Province.

But. this Labour Act. was riot l0 high-handed as that of raising the election deposit from $54) to $200 In order to shut out C.C.F. candidates from future elections. BOG should replace them, but considering the foregoing facts and the many others of a similar nature that. are available. it. is r.ny conviction that B C G definitely should be used as an added precaution.

Therefore. I have been sur- prised and disappointed that per- mission for the use of this vaccine was not. included in the recent extension of the ‘I’. B. control programme, but ibope that ll. may very soon be added to make the programme complete.

Farmers In Politics

When caucus of coalition mem- bers of the Manitoba Legislature met- to select a successor to Prem- ier Stuart S. Garson, they picked Hon. Douglas L. Campbell, B. farmer. When B. conservative caucus met in Ontario a. few weeks ago to choose a successor to Mr. George A. Drew, they named Premier Thomas L. Kennedy. a farmer. Farmers are regarded as safe and sound men, politically.

This gives Canada three farmers as provincial premiers, the other being Premier J. Waiter Jones, of Prince Edward Island. who has proved himself n good adminis- trator. This helps to balance up the situation a bit. Premiers Campbell and Kennedy succeeded lawyers, as did Mr. Jones in 1943. Premiers Matirlce Dupiessfs of Quebec. J. B. McNair of New Brunswick, and Angus L. Macdon- aid of Nova Bcotla. are lawyers. PremierByi-on Johnson, of Bril- isti Columbia, is an industrialist; Premier E. C. Manning of Alberta was a. Sunday school teacher: Premier T. C. Douglas of Saskat- chewan was is Baptist minister.
