Three Drowned When Car Skids Into N.S. River

METRO-HAN RIVER, N.S. (CP)—The bodies of three men were recovered from the Mete- ‘ghan River here Tuesday a few hours after their car skidded off a slippery highway into the water.

The victims were Louis Cook, 57, his son, Robert, 21, both of North Range, N.S., and Harris Andrews, 45, of Brighton, N.S. The Cooks were trapped in the car. Andrews freed himself but drowned trying to rescue the others.

Two others in the car escaped. Reg Andrews and Harold Gosson were carried down the river by the strong current but made short uninjured.

The accident occurred while the men were headed for Carle- ton, N.S., where they were em- ployed by a Christmas tree dealer.

Rail Operating Income Higher

OTTAWA (CW—Canadian rail- ways report higher operating in- come for September compared with the corresponding month a year earlier. Both revenues and expenses dropped but the reduc- tion was sharpest in expenses.

Bureau of statistics figures Tuesday listed September oper- ating revenues down 6.3 per cent at $97,098,000 and expenses down nine per cent at $92,387,000. Sep- tember net income was $4,711,000 against $2,113,000 in September, 1957.

The Commission’s decision to hold a plebiscite on fluori- dation was disclosed in a letter read at the monthly meeting of City Council held Monday night.

“It has come to my attention that for the first time in the history of this Province 3 ple- biscite will be held on a ques- tion .of public health. "

“We have at present chlorin- of our City water, pasteurization of our milk, pre-school inoculation against diphtheria, whooping cough, etc., and Salk Vaccine — all without a plebiscite.

“We are now installing a

' sewerage disposal system at a

cost of $100,000 to $200,000—amd no plebiscite.

“I have the signature of all the doctors and dentists in Char- lottetown (except those who were sick or out of town), and

all favor fluoridation of City water.

“A recent report from Phil- adelphia on results of fluorida- tion there reads as follows: ‘It costs 7.6 cents per person per year and at the present rate will save a million dollars annually for that City in reduced dental care. It has decreased dental decay 50 per cent and tooth ex- tractions 40 per cent -— and this, after only four years.’

“I do sincerely hope the pub— lic has more common sense than to turn down this very worth while and inexpensive

A Charlottetown construction worker 39-year-old Reginald Mac- Donald, was fatally injured when he fell from the third storey of the steel framework of the new Royal Bank structure being erect- ed” on the corner of Richmond and Queen Streets, at approxi- mately 3:45 yesterday afternoon.

He was taken to the Charlotte- town Hospital where he died shortly before midnight. Dr. Le muel E. Prowse has called an in- quest at 1.30 this afternoon at the Hennessey Funeral Home.

The late Mr. MacDonald, who resided at 19 Young Street, was employed as a carpenter with the County Construction Company, contractors for the new building.

Fellow workers said that Mr. MacDonald went up to the third floor level of the steel framework in search of a saw and apparently lost his balance.

Two Children Burned To Death

QUEBEC (CP')——'Dwo children and possibly three were burned to death and their father was seriously injured Tuesday night in a blaze that destroyed a four- storey dwelling in the old lower- town section of Quebec City.

Morgue officials said the bodies of two girls, identified as those of Collette Couture, 7, and her five-yea-r-old sister Carole, were brought to the morgue.

But hospital officials said their report was that three of the 10 children of Henri Couture per- ished in the two-alarm fire. Mr. Couture was in serious condition in hospital with burns.

Serov Transfer Sparks Widespread Speculation

One theory of the latest Krem~ lin shuffle was that Serov may have run into the peril thats dogs all Soviet police chiefs when they become too strong for their masters’ peace of mind.

Serov’s job gave him minist- rial rank and control of a power- ful arm of the Soviet state. He has always been regarded as “Khrushchev’s boy."

Diplomats who watch Soviet affairs pointed out that Khrush- chev is working on a revision of the Soviet criminal code to bring in a semblance of independence for the judiciary. Two other persons suffered burns and shock.

One of these is Mrs. Joseph E. Tondora. mother of the two babies. She was taken to a naval hospital. Her husband, a navy lieutenant, is at sea.

Also burned was Charles Shep- pard Jr., driver of trailer-truck struck by the plane as it bounced across the street, in a residential area near the Norfolk naval air station.
