The Ciacinnati Commercial has particulars ot Gen. Grants’ operations to the 22nd ult. The army was confident of au easy vietory when it marched upon Vicksburg, but the rear defences proved most formidable, consisting of a chain of forts connected by deep entrenchments extend- ing for miles. In an assault the army lost about 2000.

Officers are of opinion that another assault will not be ordered, but that a regular siege will be resorted to.
