In England the cuckoo in the harbinger of spring; lta mellow call coo-coo, the second syllable a musical third below the first, has claimed the attention of poets throughout the centuries. One of the treasures of the British Mu- atium la a 13th century M.S., begin- n ng: -

Our Cuckoo: betray their tropi- cal orlgln by their coarse voices. The syllables ka, or kow, or lrowp, rapidly repeated, are the beat that the Yellow-billed Cuckoo is capable of. The Black-billed Cuckoo is lit- tle better: the ayllable "on" . in groups of three, four, or five, la distinctive. I hope to give descrip- tions of both cuckoos next week.

"Samar ls l-eumon in”

This old iong was written by a monk of-Readlng Abbey about the middle of the 13th century. The verse given above, in the purest Wessex dialect, means: "Summer is a-comlng tn, loud sing ‘cuckoo! Graweth seed, and bloweth mead (meadow), and eprlngeth the wood now. Sing, cuckoo!" There was another verse, which Pvo all but forgotten: two lines were "Hort sterteth, bullock verteth," that is: "Hart starteth, bullock jumps about."

Nature Notes

A good neighbor recently brought to me the forward half of a email fish, which presented some peculiar- ities. At first it appeared like part of a very small swordfish, but whereas that fish has the upper jaw prolonged into the "sword". this specimen had both jaws pro- ‘ _ ‘ into a kind of bill about 1.75 inches long, Since the jaws are only about one-tenth of an inch wide, and taper to a point, they re- semble a blggleh needle. The fish le therefore known as a Btllflah, or Needleflsh; scientifically Sco ‘ v- eox aaurua.

The head is conical and the eyes large, almost one-quarter-lnch tn diameter. The fish may range up to 18 inches in length, though I think the specimen was possibly half that length. My friend, who is of an enquiring turn of mind, had half of the fish cooked, and pro- nounced lt superior to mackerel. It was taken in the western area of Rustlca Buy, but a fisherman from those partn could not recollect of ‘seeing a Blllflsh previously.

Dr. Needler reported a 16-inch Needleflsh caught in Bldeford Riv- er, Oct. 16, 1931. They have some of the habits of tropical fish and are possibly h. ,, ' -vleltors from Southern waters.

Two questions arise. (1) How does the Blliflsh get lta food, with such an inconvenient implement? Like the Woodcock, by grubblngjn the mud? (2) Are the northern waters warmer than usual this year? ‘~ I have seen no enowblrds this winter, and should like to hnve re- ports from other sections of the le- lund. There have been flocks Pine Slaklns, and Tltlnrka. duil-cr-i- orod email birds which by tho-Fr ac- tivities, enliven the winter woods. These were present in hundreds. and so were he Redpolls which often haunted the garden.

I lllva always been interested in Roman Britain, and spent my he“. days as a young man, in exploring such relics of that enterprising people as still exist. In order to consolidate their conquests the Romans built n. network of roads all over southern Britain, l.e., Eng- land. The original Celtic inhabi- tants had so-called roads such as the Icknleld Way, but the" wgrg mefllY tracks (trails), liable to Ililht deviations from slight causes. parallel trails. The Romans, an exact and practical people, bum roads, some of which had survived centuries of neglect and ill-usage, and were still carrying traffic up to 60 yearn ago.

Near the Roman Wall one or two short roads were paved with lar stone slabs, but ln general the Ro- man roads traversing the country were constructed according to the directions laid down by Vltruvlus. This man was a military ‘engineer under Julius Caesar, and wrote an account of his road-building for the Ruldance of others. The road was begun by making two parallel furrows (the boundaries) and re- moving all the coll between them, down to the hard solid earth. Then they filled the excavation with fine earth, hard beaten in: this layer was called the pnvlmentum, Upun this was laid the first bed of the "id. 8m!“ Iqunred stones nicely arranged on the ground: if mortar waa available a large quantity was lml-“ed "M!!! the stones, other- wise the stones were left dry. This layer was tor ’ the statesmen. The next layer was called the rudug or ruderatto, and consisted of a mass of small broken stones, mixed with lime. one part stone to two parts lime. The third layer or bed, (the lllltflfllll). was former of a mixture of lime, chalk, broken earthenware tiles, or earth, beaten ‘ “ , or else of gravel. land and lime mixed with clay. Upon this was laid the llllilce 0!‘ Pavement of the road, called technically the Iummum don- aum or aumma crush. The crust; was sometimes like the cobble stones of early 19th century streets, and sometimes of squared or poly- gonal flagstones.

If this was properly carried out the result was a Roman road of the most perfect type, such as ls still to be seen ln Lancaahlre, but these di- rections were‘ not always strictly adhered to. Some roads were with- out the nucleus, in others the statumen was wanting. As, how- evcr,-tlle different courses raised the road higher than the surround- ing ground. the completed road was often termed the agger (mound). One characteristic of these early roads ls that they never shlrked a hill to detour round it in the modern fashion; straight up and over the top they went!

It will be noticed that the Ro- man road-bulldere used "local" ma- terlal in their task: nothing was imported. They were not sparing of the lime which was abundant in Britain; and it was probably this material that caused the agger ta be so long-lived. Cement doea not appear to have been used in the roads, though it is more enduring. (The Romans invented cement, and their product was of very superior quality.)

Coming to modern times, the making of roads was quite a pro- blem for the authorities of New- oactle on Tyne. The streets had formerly been laid with cobble- stones, a paving still to be found, 40 years ago, in the older parts of the city. It was an enduring pave- ment but not e. smooth one! The main roads into the city were cov- orert with broken limestone, con- aolldatcd by "steam-roller," and patched annually. When asphalt came in. a cost was laid over the limestone,’ and made a good sur- face, but I noticed that repairs were

n! the city, where traffic was greatest. was paved with granite blocks, but these seemed unmit- nble, in some respect. They were taken up, and a thick, smooth, bed of concrete laid dawn. Thousands of blocks of Kaurl Pine ‘were brought front Australia. and laid on the concrete, with the cross- urnln expose’ to the traffic. Puzzled and perturbed, the stew- ardess made the mistake of tidying the cabin slightly before her fears swamped her sense of duty and she rushed out with an ominous tale. Night-watchman Steer had al- ready reported to his superior that at 3.30 a.rn. the two bell-pushes in Cabin 136 for "steward" “at ," had flicked up red aignale on his indicator board, rang for several secondr.

He had gone to the cabin, knock- ed, opened the door -- had it slam- ed ln his face by a man.

Ship's captain Arthur Petey made fruitless search for Gay Gib- son. Then he adioed her ere. the Union Castle Line, who called up the Southampton police.

Soon the reply came across half the world: Sea, padlock the cabin, disturb nothing, await Bollthamp- tan C1D. officers boarding you at Cowes Roads."

Gay Gibson's body had apparent- ly been thrust. through the cabin parthole into shark-infested tropic waters, three times as far from land as any human has successful- ly ewum, while the ship was do- ing l8 knots.

Among officers of the day watch aboard hundreds of vessels, that patch of ocean 170 miles west of the African cadet became "Posi- tlonx." By meeting the liner on a special- ly chartered tug at Oavrea Reads, Detective Sergeant Quinlan gained hours of investigating time before the ebip docked. He searched Mina Gibson's cabin, questioned crew and passengers, then brought his problem to the Fingerprint Department of the Yard . . . So it was that the murder of Gay Gibson began for me on the ‘ of October 28, while win- try winds shredded leave from the Thames Embankment trees below my office windows in the towers of Scotland Yard.
