In charitable activities, the Society: raised $ 528 during its Bain Birdathon for contribution to the Geoff Hogan Biology Honours Research Fund; contributed .American Birds to the U.P.E.I. library and, when that. was discontinued, sponsored its replacement Audubon Field.Notes; presented.a copy of The Maritimes Breeding Bird Atlas to the Confederation Centre Library; and contributed $ 100 to the Island Nature Trust's Natural Areas Honourary Deeds program to purchase natural areas.

The cooperators on the Amphibian Monitoring Project prepared a draft report for a national publication on amphibian monitoring programs in Canada. This information was utilized to prepare the special report in Issue 133 of the Island Naturalist. The Hillsborough Pier Tern Colony seen another successful breeding year thanks to the Society's intervention through the removal of two Great Black-backed Gull nests.

natural history through conversations with CBC producers. The Society attached copies of the Canadian Nature Federation brochure to one issue of its newsletter to encourage members to join the primary national naturalist organization.

0n the financial end, the Society had revenues of $ 10,168.44 and expenditures of S 11,635.94 for a net loss of $ 1,467.50. This however included $ 1,294.70 for the reprinting of the newsletter from the book fund and $ 1,282.21 for slides from Vireo for additions to the teaching collection of the Society. Both of these latter projects were from accruals from projects in previous years and were being held in reserve for these projects. The costs were kept under control in part by reducing the size of the newsletter (see Island Naturalist # 134) and asking the schools whether they wished to continue receiving the newsletter.

NATURALIST IN ACTION: by Dan McAskill

Members of the Natural History Society were deeply saddened by the recent death of Mr. Wendell MacKay. Wendell became one of the eighteen founding members of the Society at its inaugural meeting on November 13, 1969 and, since then, has been one of the unsung heroes of the Society. It was Wendell and Thomas Lothian who took on and completed the arduous task of preparing the Society's constitution in 1972 and 1973. During this same period he initiated efforts to access a meeting room in the Provincial Health Building to overcome problems with changing‘ meeting places. He was successful and, on January 17, 1973 and for the subsequent 12 years, Society members met and learned more about natural history at this site.

It was in 1974 that Wendell, then serving as a Director of the Society, proposed the creation of a nature slide competition for members. Since then, the annual nature slide show has been one of the most popular events of the Natural History Society of Prince Edward Island. It was also Wendell who proposed the logo contest that led to the creation of the Society's logo by Claire Martin.

Over the years, Wendell contributed to many other areas of the Society's

health and activities through work on the Executive Committee, judging of the U.P.E.I. Natural History Society awards, drafting of constitutional
