Like Mrs. Quack, and the other Duck folk. Jerry and Mrs. Jerry are water lovers. They went about their busi- ness -Just as if-it were not rain- ing at all,

The gentle rain became less gentle. It fell harder and harder. It poured and it kept right on pouring. It rained all that night. When, a little before daylight, Jerry and Mrs. Jerry went back home. the rain was still falling. It rained all of the next day .To- wardlevening the rain ceased for a while.

When the two Muskrat: went out. they found Laughing Brook rushing down into the smiling Pool. It was pouring into the Smil- ing Pool with such a rush that it was hard to swim against. The water was rising fast. Presently. Mrs. Jerry began to worry. It look- ed as if their new house might soon be under water. It was then that Mrs. Jerry changed her mind about a house in the bank.

The nub of the proposition is this: when a player who has a part-score jumps io two notrump, he is stating that he has some- thing in reserve. and therefore his bid in itself is a slam suggestion. however tentative The two-no- trump bid is made in this case on the sort of hand that would well justify it three-notrump bid at a love score: this is the point that average players do not fully under- stand. ,North. holding three aces and a better hand than was guaranteed by his opening, did no more than was proper in going along wtih South's strong action. even though his own three-notrump bid was over-score. but south should have confined his own further effort to a gingerly four-notrump bid (not conventionally Blackwoodl, and North passed at that safe ebntract.
