Reunions Paaseco‘rton.-—Our readers are al ready aware ofthe fact 'that the Por'.uguese island of Ma. deira—wherc the established religi- on is the ltoman Catholic, none other lieingtolerated among the com- mon people—has been the theatre of ‘unpleasant occurrences, owing toa _-desire of some of the population to become Protestants. A letter from that island, of date Nov. 26, narrates the particulars ofa conﬂict between the Protestant converts and the nu— Mary, which had recently occurred.— It states that the Protestants were assailed early in November while en- .gafed in religious service,that the po ice broke into the house, knock- ed down the man who was ofﬁciating in the service, and carried ofi‘ four or five prisoners. The people having pursued them, released the prisoners and captured the police, except one, who escaped. 'I'he populace tied the hands and feet ofthe police and left them on the road. An army ofSQO men was then ordered out to put down the converts, and a fatal con» ﬂict ensued. Eight soldiers were killed, also a number of Protestants. A large number of the latter were - taken prisoners, who are to be sent

to Portugal to be tried as rebels.

Romance IN rue Lire or s Fac- ’roar GIRL—Bliss Irene Nichols, daughter of Mr.Nathaniel Nichols, of Monmouth, Kennebec county, while at work in a factory in Dorchester, Mass.. some four years since, was offered very liberal wages to go to Mexico. and engage in a factory just established there. She.with eight others, accepted the offer. While there, she became acquainted with 'Ii‘errera, the present revolting and successful General, with whom she contracted marriage. She madea visit to her friends in Maine, last summer, during which she received frequent letters from Ferrera. She left here in July or August last, for Mexico, via New York, where she obtained a license, and was united in marriage to General Ferrera by his representative, the General not being able to leave Mexico-a step rendered necessary. as the parties were both Protestants, and could not be married in Mexico, a Catholic country. Ferrera is new President of Mexico, having his head quarters at the national palace in the city, and this Kennehec ‘factory girl’ now ‘ revels in the halls of the Montezu- mas.’ General Ferrera is of German extraction.

It consists ofa small sized mahogany wheel,working on a screw of great power in concert with heavy cogs at the head oftho rudder, which is moved by it with such case that a child ten years of age, can handle it as a toy. even in a gale of wind. A young man in Portland, N. B., in attempting to ascend to thetop of Fort Howe, a hill almost perpen- dicular, which was nearly covered with snow, was precipitated to the bottom by the avalanche giving way, and buried beneath 30 feet of snow. A number of men were immediately on the spot, and fortunately began at the right place, and succeeded in igging him out, which being done, he was found to be butjust alive, in consequence ofthe extreme pressure and suffocation.

AccrncN'rs on THE [CL—On Sunday the 2d inst. Thomas Hunt, Esq. late Sheriff of Prince County, left St. Elean- or’s, and took the ice for l’rincetown.— While on his way, his horse fell through the ice, and it was with difficulty, after being badly frozen,that he saved his own life.

A similar accident happened to Doctor Poona of Charlottetown, on his return from Belfast, where he had been visiting a sick person. It appears that after leaving Orwell, he mistook the Point of Governor’s Island for that of Gallow’s Point, and drove about 2 miles outside ofthe former towards the sea ice, where in very thick weather and amidst the drifting snow, he lost his horse “ Sir Francis,” known as a good raCer-the sleigh also, and only escaped himsclf in the midst of peril.
