We loaded up the sleighs with some cf our stuff, about 225 Ibs each, and started acroes tiie lakes. The trail was awful and we waded through water and slush two or three feet deep. We got tothe mouth of the canyon at about 8 o’clock at night,done out. We left there that night and pushed on again until morning. We gotto che boitum of an

there to the hill above the lake. We had about 2} miles over hills, in snow and slush, I carried about 500 pounds over tnat part of the trail. We had to get dogs to bring the staff down from the summit to the head of the canyon.

“We worked two days bringing the stuff over from tbe canyon to the hill above the lake. Saturday we worked al! day pa-k- ingdown the hilltotbe Jake, and came here on a scow. We were out yesterday morning cutting down trees to builda boat. The timberis small, and I don’t think we can get more than four-inch stuff. It rained all afternoon, and we couldn’t do anything. There are about fifty boats of all eorts on Lake Bennet, which is about half a mile from here. I have long rabber boote up to the hips, and I did not have them on coming from the summit down, but I have worn them ever since.”

“We met Barwell and Lewis, of (ttawa, to-day. They were out looking for knees for their boats They left Ottawa six weeks ago, and have not got any farther than we bawe. There was a little saw mill going here, and they have their lamber sawn. We have it that warm some dava here that you would fairly roast, aod the next day you would be looking for your overcoat. Everybody here seems to be tak- ing in enough food to do them a couple of years.

‘There is an awful pile of Yankees coming Out here. We are now in Canadian territory, after we passed the summit. I will have towatch somebody going through to Dyea to give him this letter, but I don’t know how long before I can get anyone going through. So far as the officials have Lecn able to learn upto the prerent Palmyra Ieland was occupied a good many years ago by a number of Hawaiian citizens, who raised the Hawaiian flag over the territory. The island was first discovered by the fam us British nav gator Captain Cook, who afterwards lost his life in the Hawaiian islands. According to the Hawaiian Government, Palmyra island has never been surveyed, so that its extent cannot be accurately estimated. It was known some time ago as an American island.

Diep THis Morxinc.— We announce today, with regret, the death of Mr. Patrick Connolly, which occurred at his residence, Haviland Street, early this morning. Mr. Conno!ly was anative of [reland, and for some time after coming to this pro- vince was in the employ of bis uncle, the late Owen Connoily. Subsequentiy he and hi+ brother established the firm of Connolly Bros. Latterly, however, he has been doing busines on his own account. Mr. Connolly was in every sense a good citizen, and was deservedly popular with all who knew him. He was married Jast autumn to Miss Maggie ©’Callaghan, daughter of B. O'Callaghan, Es+q., who, with his mother and other relative:, bas the sympathy of all.

The grounds are approached by means of tram cars that now pass on the south side of Almon sireet, and by the time ot the Ex- nibition different streets will be double- tracked so as to give ample lines of travel to the grounds; the city authorities heing quite in ¢arnest in the matter of speedy transit toand from the exhibition grounds are doing all in their power to prevent tne congestion of passenger tratlic.

Exhibitors will be glad to know that the department of railways has extended the cotton factory siding, which branches off from the 1.C. R,at Richmond, along the northern ‘bounaary of the exhibition: grounds, so that all live stock and heavy exhibite for-@Machinery Hali, and in fact exhibits of al) kinds, can be readily unload- ed from the cars.

The grounds cover some 30 acres, and have been obtained at a cost of $23,600 and the buildings when completed ill cost about $62,000. The various buildings are all of the jatest and most approved style of architecture, and will be fitted up with every couvenience for exhibitors. The grand stand will seat 4000 people, and all the seats have backs. , .
