There was at one time a rumor in the regiment—how it originated [ never could learn—that the Old Boy was a southern man by birth and that he was at West Point, from which place he deserted and joined us under an assumed name. The rumor further had it that his family were Confederate while he was Union, and that his name—Hood—was assumed, but I bless myself for never heeding a rumor against a friend's character, and I felt like a friend to the Old Boy

In the Atlanta campaign we were one night—and a black, wet night it was— deing vidette dnty in front of the Four teenth corps with Hardee's Confederates facing us. The Old Boy was in charge of & post, and I recall that during the night there was some desultory firing.
