TO DRAIN NEW ORLEANS. The commissich which has charge of ‘the task of providing for the disposition of the surface drainage of New Orleans has decided to use electric power for pumping away the enormous quantities of rainwater which it bas to deal with, and a contract for an electric outfit for the central power house and for three pumping stations has just been made tvith the General Electric company of Schenectady, N. Y. A great part of the city of New Orleaas lies below the mean level of the Mississippi river and only a little above the level of Lake Pontchar- train, and when rains fall the little flow that can be got naturally is not enough to keep the city gom being flooded. In ordinary show*s the usual fall is an inch of water an hour, and in heavy showers this amount runs up to 63g inches. In order to gather this and get rid of it the New Orleans drainage commission is having two long canals dug from the low parts of the city to the other side of the Me- tairie ridge, which lies about midway between the river and Lake Pontchar- train. A pumping station will be estab- lished at the bead of each of these vanals to lift the water into other artificial ways, Whence it can run off into the lake.

One of these canals is above and the other below Bayou St. John, which reaches into the heart of the city from Lake Pontchartrain. The one below will be divided into two parts, and at Broad and St. Louis streets, where their different levels meet, a third pumping station will be established to lift the water from the lower to the upper level. This station will be known as No. 2, and it will lift the water three feet. The cther stations, numbered respective- ly 6 and 7, will be at the ends of the canals and will each lift the water ten feet. The pumps at station 2 will be able to raise 500 cubic feet of water three feet every second. Those at each of the other stations must raise 800 cubic feet of water ten feet every second.

The whole system is to be supplied with power and operated from a central station situated at the Florida avenue crossing of the N. O. and N. E. rail- road. Here will be the bigdynamos, Of these there will be three, of 1,000 horse- power each, one of 500 horsepower and two of 100 horsepower each. The object in dividing the power in this way is to enable the engineers to throw in what- ever amount of power may be needed to clear the canals of water in accordance with the severity of the rains.

Multiphase, high tension dynamos and motors will be used. The current will go out at 3,300 volts and reach the motors at the pumping stations at 3,000 volts. Two separate sets of wires will reach to the pumping stations to guard against breakdowns. The nearest pump- ing station will be No. 2. That will be 15,000 feet away. The next will be 7, 18,800 feet away, and 6 will be 26,000 feet from the power honse, Station 2 will have two pump motors of 125 horse- power each and one uf 40 horsepower, and each of the cther stations will have three motors of 450 horsepower each.

Instead of using ordinary pumps the water is to be raised by whirling screws just like the propeller screw of a steam- ship. For the big stations each of these scrows will be about 12 feet in diameter and will make 6244 revolutions a min- ute. The screws will work in a pit and their shafts stand vertical. The motors will be attached directly to the upper end of these shafts and revolve horizon- tally. It is intended eventually to build and equip five other pumping stations when the drainage canal system is fully developed.-—New York Sun,

There is something in the tone of the stranger, to say nothing of the suggest- ive way in which he handles his six shooter, that discourages further ques- tioning. So as quickly as his shaken nerves will allow the coal merchant dresses himself and follows the visitor down stairs. When he emerges into the street, his fears are redoubled. By the faint gray light of the dawn he perceives that a large crowd has surrounded his house, and, to judge from the fierce yells with which they greet his appear- ance, their errand is not exactly a peace- able one.

But the vender of black diamonds has little time for speculation. In the twinkling of an eye he is seized, tightly bound and dragged to a nearby tree. Then as the ringleader comes forward with a rope the shuddering captive recognizes him as a customer of the day before.

‘*Mercy!’’ he implores, but the lead- er’s oniy reply is a snarl of rage. In desperation the terrified man appeals to the crowd.
