After landing the Mails for England, epd receivmlg a supply of coal, she proceeded, at 12 oclock, for alifax, where she arrived on the fol- lowmg day: After receiving on board, at 3 o’clock, p. m., the right wing of the 23d Welsh Fusileers, and the British Mails by the Caledonia, for Canada, she proceeded again for Quebec.

NEWFOUNDLAND.

Disastrous Fire at St, John’s, waoundlaizd—By papers received from St. John’s, Newfoundland, we earn that another destructive fire had just taken place in that town. The fire broke out about 12 o'clock on the night of the 28th tilt., in the back part of the premises occupied by Mrs. M‘Pherson, keeper of the Commercial Room, and extended eastward to the dispensary of Dr. Stabb, and west as far as the Gazette Office, reducing to ashes those and the whole of the intermediate buildings. By the utmost exertions, the fire was got under with great diflicul- ty, about 3 o’clock the following morning. Goods Were damaged in the fire-proof cellar attached to the shop of Messrs. W. 85 H. Thomas & Co., to the amount of above £6000, and although there were seven inches of water in the cellar at the time, the roof and the rest of the buildin were narrowly saved. Insurance was partially e ected on the pro- perty destroyed, and we understand that some of the oflices here will snfi'er loss. The fire was at first attributed to an incendiary, but it was after- wards ascertained that it caught from a candle in Mrs. M‘Pherson’s bedroom; she awoke from sleep in her cot, leaped on the bed, ‘and narrowly esca-

ped the flames, having part of her body scorched.

Last week we were under the necessity of striking of ‘a 1: part of our impression without the news by the Steamer, which did not arrive until half- past seven on Saturday evening, and to our no small annoyance, we find ourselves similarly circum- stanced this week, as there is not yet any signrof her approach. She may be detained for the English Mail, which was expected to arrive at Halifax on Wednesday last.

On Wednesday last, a Deputation, consisting of Donald Macdonald and William Dingwell, Esqrs. two of the Re resentatives for King’s County, wait- red upon His xcellency the Lieutenant Governor with the following Petition on behalf of the six utt- fortunate individuals now undergoing the sentence of the Court in Georgetown Jail, for a riot, and for obstructing the Sheriff in the execution of his duty.

The Petition of the Inhabitants of King’s County, humbly sheweth: That your Petitioners are greatly alarmed at a ‘trial and sentence passed at the Supreme Court, held lately at Georgetown, upon John MfKie, John Cofiin and William Douglas, of Bay ' Fortune, .John and James Howlet, of Little River, .and Wil- liam Blackett, of Grand River, who are sentenced to a long imprisonment of from four to ten _mon_ths, and three of them to a fine of £20 each, chIdes 1m- prisonment: That it appears upon the efficient an- nexed, of creditable persons, that the eVIdence which led to such sentences of the court was false in material points, and consequently is impei'tectun the whole; and it is the opinion and firm belief of your Petitioners, that the prisoners .are not guilty of ,a riot, for which they are suffering punishment. Under such circumstances, itl is alarmingto your Petitioners to see men whom they deem Innocent deprived of their liberty and property, and their families reduced to poverty and misery, by a false witness. We therefore pray your Excellency to take the case into your consideration, and grant such relief as on in your wisdom shall deem meet; and your Petitioners, as in duty bound, Wlll ever pray. TEMPERANCE SOCIETY.—A public meeting of the Clinrlottelowm Temperance Society was held in the Baptist Meeting House. Kent Street, on Monday evening last, the Rev. \V. Smith, Wesleyan Missionary, Vice President,I in the chair, when, as had been previ- ously announced, a lecture on the advantages of Tom- perapce, was delivered by the Rev. James IVaddcll, Prestdent of the Society, in which the subject was treated with his usual ability. Owing to the unfavou- rable state of the weather, the attendance was rather thin, which we regret, as the lecture was well calculated to convince all who heard it of the immense utility of the temperance system; indeed every thinking man must perccive that sobriety is the source of industry, health and prosperity, of temporal and religious welfare, and every virtue.
