The “backward” refers to the direction of the finesse, not the declarer’s intelligence. Fred L. Karpin, of Silver Spring, Md., gives a good exam- ple of the power of the play in his new book The Play of the Cards recently published. would lead a club to the ace and return a club to the jack. If East held the queen, the finesse would work and there would be no club loser.

This method of play succeeds about 50 pet cent of the time in the usual course of events. It would fail in this deal because West holds the queen.

But declarer is on notice from the bidding that the normal way to play the clubs is doomed to fail. It is not likely that West would epen the bidding unless he had the queen of clubs. This view is strongly supported by East's pass. It is not reasonable to sup- pose that East had the ace of hearts and queen of clubs and passed. ,

South: should therefore invoke the so - called backward finesse. He attacks clubs by leading the jack. If West ducks, so does dum- mv, and the hand is over. But let's say West covers with the queen.

Dummy takes the ace and leads the nine for a finesse through East’s (hoped-for) ten. East has it and the plan succeeds.

Mathematically, the backwa finesse succeeds only 25 per cent of the time in a series of rand- om deals. West would be dealt the queen and East the ten only a fourth of the time. Fo this reason the play is seldom used. But where West is known to have the queen, the backward finesse is the only hope.
