To a | woman who attempted to dissuade him from | his intentions he replied that he was a good | Baptist and wanted to die as such, and) jumped into the swift current. The cold | water changed his faith, for on rising he | caught hold of the boom and tcld the! woman he had changed his mind and that she had better call some help. Help was soon on hand and Mr. Dunphy was rescued. True, the thing has been done elsewhere; but have we nothing | else to do but to imitate the faults of a} civilization having a tendency to revive | pagan customs / sidan A Case IN Pornt.—A few weeks ago the | New Glasgow Enterprise noted an enquiry from a prominent gentleman connected with the New York produce exchange for samples of Nova Scotia homespuns. Speci- mens of the Oxford mills were forwarded by one of the Enterprise advertisers. The keen-eyed managers of the Charlottetown Woolen Mill saw the paragraph, clipped it | out, and forwarded it with samples of their | goods to the secretary of the New York | produce exchange, with a request for his | patronsge. The gentleman was so pleased | with the push of the Charlottetown people and the handsome samples sent him, that he ordered six suits of homespun from the two mills. This will be an excellent adver- tisement for Nova Scotia wovlens among | the 3,000 members of the exchange and may result in making Nova Scotia tweeds fashionable in New York. The New York Zpoch tells a little story illustrating how distinguished moralists fre- quently recripocate favors, Showman Bar- num entered the church of the Messiah, of which Rev. Robert Collyer is pastor, and quietly took a back seat, The preacher saw him, and said in a loud voice; ‘“‘Isee P. T. Barnum in a back pew in this church, and I invite him to come forward and take a seat ingfmy family pew. Mr. Barnum always gives me a good seat in his circus, and I want to give him as good in my church. Mr. Bar- num was surprised at this public invitation, but, of course, he accepted it.
Says the Montreal Star; Some very im- portant changes in the staff of the Canadian Pacific Railway are on the tapis, and will be carried into effect between now and May 8. It is stated that Mr. Van Horne will resign from the general-managership, retaining, however, the presidency of the road. The names of Mr. Wm. White, Western superintendent, and of Mr. T. G. Shaughnessy are mentioned as probable successors. Other changes in the divisional superintendents are also spoken of. Mr. Tuttle, who leaves on the first of May, to assume his new position in New York, will, it is understood, be sueceeded by Mr. MecNicoll, Genera) Passenger Agent, under tife supervi- sion of Mr. Olds, General Traffic Manager. A good deal of gossip is being indulged in amongst railway men regarding these changes, and it is whispered that the directors favor the appointment of a Canadian, rather than an American, to the general-managership. The rival claims of Canadians versus Ameri- eans are also forming a fruitfrl topic of con- versation in certain circles, and it is ramored that quite an amount of wire pulling is going on. Mr. Wm. White is in the city to-day, and has had a conference with the General Manager. Mr. White was formerly superin- tendent of the Ontario and Quebec n.

When the House went into committee of ways and means, Mr. Mulock asked what action the Government proposed to take on the application of Ontario millers for an in- crease in duty on flour.
The Speaker ruled the question out of
order.
Mr. Jones, of Halifax, pitched into Sir Johu for Jetting members go home early, charging that it was done with a party bias. :
Sir John said he had consented to the early departure in but two cases—Mr. Yeo, of P. E. Island, and another Opposition member.
The statement was corroborated by Mr. Trow, chief oppositiyn whip, who said there had been no departure from the usual practice and that his consent had been obtained before the full sessional nee was paid the departing mem- ers.
Messrs. Cartwright, Lovitt, Mulock and Jones thereupon peunced on Mr. Trow and |
said it was outrageous that the Liberals should be hustled round at the mere will of their whips.
This afternoon the order paper was clear- ed off and the House devoted itself to ques- tions and answers.
Sir John intimated that the next parlia- ment would meet early in January.
The Washington Centennial. New York, May 1.
The great event of to-day, and the last in the series of centennial celebrations to commemorate the inauguration of Washing- ton, was the civic parade designed to illus- trate the industrial progress of the country during its century of national life. The weather was clear and cool. From a very early hour crowds began to gather along the line of march, and before the hour arrived for the parade to move, every available seat had been preempted, and windows and doors as well as the sidewalks were filled with spectators. The parade was under the management of General Daniel Butterfield as chief marshal, and the smoothness with which the pro- gramme was carried out showed the excel- lent result of his careful attention to details during the elaborate preparations which he had been making for weeks past. 80,000 men were in line. President Harrison and party will leave for Washington at five
,o clock this afternoon from Jersey City.

25, since when she has not been heard from. Her owners to-day have given her up az lost. She carried a crew of 14 men, 12 of whom were Nova Scotians and 2 P. KE. Islanders, named Martin S. John and Benj. Dixon. The Shilop was built here in 18.34.
The Queen's Birthday.

The Queen’s Birthday will probably be celebrated with greater eclat this year in Mon:real than for a long time past.
The contemplated visit to Montreal of the (jueen’s Own of Toronto and the Foot Guards of Ottawa, is looked forward to with the greatest possible pleasure by sol- dier and civilian alike. The visiting sol- diers will be grandly welcomed, and a real soldier’s field day indulged in.

At St. Andrew's, on April 25th, after an illness of five days, of inflammation of the lungs, Gabriel McDona!'d, in the 81st year of his age. Deceased was a man of upright character, a good neighbor, and a kind and loving sates and father. He leaves a sor- rowing widow, three sons and three daughters, also a large circle of relations and friends to mourn their loss. May his soul rest in peace.
