Tue Duke of Westminster, the richest of England's nobles, is shortly to be married to the sister of Mr. Cavendish, who married the duke’s daughter some four and a half years ago. By the duke’s new marriage he wil! thus be brother-in-law and uncle to his little grandson. The Duke is fifty-six years old, and Miss Cavendish is a young lady.

Ow Friday last. fourteen of the Canadian Wimbledon Team, before sailing for England, practiced at Quebec, and we are pleased to see ‘that the island representative—Private Dover—gave a good account of himself. At the close of the match the score stood: Mitchell 90 out of a possible 105; Dover 88 ; Huntington 83, and the others an average of 79.

ALL accounts from the Miramichi egree in saying that the salmon catch is the best for many years. The fishermen are getting good hauls in their nets, the freezers are filling up, the shipments are large, and the anglers are beginning to have good sport. The salmon exodus, like the other exodus, appears to be eaten end; and there will, doubtless, be a cessation of grumbling at the fish breeding houses. The salmon industry in an import- ant one, and a good catch means a great many thousands of dollars divided among the fishermen and the dealers. — Moncton Times.

Tue strange statement is made by the Char- lottetown EXamiNer that fifty or sixty voters in Queen’s County were deprived of their franchise because there were no ballots for them! The supply was short, and had been exhausted. This is a new danger to be guard-

“ach an occurrence ought not, uowever, to deprive electors of the right of suffrage. Ballots shouid be improvised with white paper and ink for the occasion, and the courts be asked to admit them as valid on general principles. No mere technicality ought to he allowed ts deprive a man of the right of suffrage, and there should be a clause in the law giving larger powers for dealing with such emergencies. — Moncton Times

“Tae Micuty Dortar” in which the Tavervier-Lewis Company make their first | appearance this, Friday evening, is sa'd to be | one of the most comical pieces of the day. It has been played by the wel-known Mr. and Mrs, W, J. Florence for the past twelve years throughout the United States, and was also | produced by them at the Gaiety Theatre, London, where it made an immense hit. run- ning for 100 nights. The Tavernier-Lewis Company are the first and only Company that have ever produced it in the Province, and it made the hit ot the season in Halifax, running for five consecutive performances. The Chronicle, in an extended notice says:—‘‘ The Mighty D6llar, judging by its reception last night, will draw crowded houses for the rest of the week. Many were present who have seen the Florences in the play. and say that last nights performance was fully equal tO the originals " * the audience was kept in a constant ripple of laughter from beginning to end, and the whole performance is one that those who epjoy a hearty laugh and capital acting should not fail to wituess.

Tus Caxapa Temperance Act is new being strictly enforced in Fredericton. The Capital's Police Court report says :

Joseph Ashe was sent vo jail for fifty days in default of the payment of a fine under the C. T. A., which was imposed prior to the decision of the Privy Council. David Gillespie paid $50 for a similar fine, which was also imposed before thejdeciaion. | Wiiliam Martin did likewise for a similar | cause.

Yesterday morning George Colwell was arranged before the P. M. on acharge of having sold liquor eontrary to the provisions ! of the Canada Temperance Act. Mr. H. | B. Raiesford appéared as counsel for the | defendant. There was only one witness, | and he convicted Colwell. The P. M. | accordingly fmed him $50 or two months | jail.

Supreme Covurt.—The jury trials com- menced to-day. ‘The first case which is now op, is the assault case of McKennajus. White. The Attorney Genera! for the preseettion, and Mr. A. B. Warburton and Mr, Artbur Peters for the traverser. ‘The Grand Jury found no Bill against the girl Stewart charged with conceaiment. A true Bill has beeu found against Burnett for the recent mail robbery at County Line. His trial is set down for Mon- day.

Tue Tavernier-Lewis Dramatic Company performed in Summerside last evening before a large house. The play was placed upon the stage in an excellent manner, and not a single hitch occurred during the entire evening. The cast was an excellent one, and the ‘‘ Mighty Dollar’ was given amidst rears of langhter and loud applause—‘‘ by a large majority.” It is unnecessary to give a lengthy rep rt of this first-rate performance ; suthce it to say that the Company well de- serve the liberal patroxage the public are be- stowing upon them. Every one should see the ‘‘ Mighty Dollar.”

Ir is reported that, on Declaration Day, the Grits of Montague and surrounding country, made extensive preparations for a big blaze or bonfire; but the news from Georgetown that the Returning Officer did ot return Dr. Robertson, and that it was conclusively shown that he was ineligible as a candidate when he nominated, threw a damper upon the combus- tibles, and they did not burn. A wag who watched the whole proceedings said he did not see any cause for rejoicing, except on the partof the Government supporters, and the enly reason he could see for the Grits attempt- ing te get up a blaze wonld be to signify that their party had gone to blazes.
