Three weeks before the holidays, and the outlook for a merry Christmas was a gloomy one, at least so far as the members of the stock company of the Jollity Theatre were con-erned, Salary jay had comme and gone, and as yet the ghost had shown no disposition to

walk, and it was because of the non- appearance of that most w s:ome spec- tcr of stageland that the rumor had started and was rap‘dly gaining ground that Messrs. Hustle and Hardup, pro- prietors and managers of the Jollity

rheatre, were “in a hole again.”

The piece which occupied the boards sad proved a flat failure, and receipts a: the box office hed iv.sen in conse- juence to a plane never before reached in the histery of the hceuse. Moreover, no new play had as yet been put in re- hearsal, and an atmesphere of unmis takable gloom and apprehension per vaded the region behind the footlights and weighed heavily on the spirits of every one there, from Pearl Livirg- stone, the talented emotional actress who played the !teading female parts, down to Jittle Kitty Sullivan, who wa% years old and was in the depths f despair because for fully three weeks she had been out of the bill. In short, every member of the company was in a condition of mingled uncertainty and curiosity in regard to the future of the playhouse and the projects of its mana- gers, who as yet had given no sign of their intentions and had, in fact, heen invisible to the members of their artis- tie staff ever since the last day on which salaries became due.

On this particular night, which hap- pened to be one of storm and rain, two er three ef the principal actors had gathered together for a sericus talk about the situation, when Tom, the pro- gramme boy, appeared suddenly before them in an almost breathiess condition und exclaimed: “Mr. Freelance is back fom Chicago.
