We regret to learn thatthe barns of Mr. Lauchian McKenzie, Long Creek, to- gether with their contents, were burned to the ground on Thursday evening, the 25th inst. The origin of the fire is unknown. At this season such a loss is most grievous. We sympathize with Mr. McKenzie.

Sir,-—We have tried one of the new water tanks and it has failed It leaked every drop that was pnt intoit. No doubt the citizens havea rizhtto know the canse. Itis this: the tank was sank through hard earth and then through a rock, and under the rock was loese gravel and shaky stones. I did not like the bottom and I had an extra course of bricks laid on it, but it failed; the bottom settled and let the water ail rnn off. We In- tend to lay another course of bricks upon the old, and think it will then hold the water. This will not delay the use of the tank much onger. :

Sir,—It was very annoying to those who attended the very excellent Concert last evening, to have to listen to an aecompani- ment by a rowdy inthe audience, who, during the rendition of seme of the best pieces, kept up an incessant poundimg on the floor with a walking stick. It is high time, | think, that the yonths who attend these performances had learned decorum? or even commen sense. In no civilized place ontside ef P. ©. Island weuld sych contemptible conduct be tolerated. I would suggest to the friendsof the rowdy mentioned, that they take him in hand, and use the walking stick for the purpose of beating brains into hin.

On the evening of the 25rd inst., an enthusiastic meeting was held at Amherst, to consider the matier of building the rail- way from Amherst to Cape Tormentine. Bay Verie, Port Elgin, and theline of country extending to Cape Tormentine, were represented, besides the residents of
Amherst. Hon. R. B. Dickie occupied the chair, and J. Aibert Black was acting Secretary. Resolutions in favor of the pro-
ject were passed unanimously.

The Civil Service Commission at Ottawa has notified the deputy heads of depart- ments to hold meetings of their elerks, for the election of representatives to appear before the Commission to give information as to position of the employees.
M. C. Jarvis, of London, Eng., is in Ottawa, for the purpose of conferring with Mr. Gisborne, relative to some improve- ments in cablegraphy.
Cure for Diphtheria.
A Hamilton (South Austra'ian) paper pub- lishes details of the ‘‘Greathead” cure for Diphtheria. The disease is declared by Mr. Greathead to be of hydrated growth, and that the germs of it floating about in certain impure atmospheres were inhaled by human beings. For a grown person, four drope of sulphuric acid dijuted in three quarters of a tumbler of water: with a smaller dose for children. The effect of this treatment was instantaneous, the acids at once destoying the parasites, and the patient coughing up the obstruction. The papers have teemed with accounts of suffer- ers who have recovered in a few minutes by adopting the ‘* Greathead Treatment.” Chil- dren, wimost previously in a dying state, were declared to be playing abeut within ten minutes, and at a computation some forty or fifty of these sudden recoveries have been placed on record with full particulars.
