Mgny people would reply that they do not particularly want for- giveness: they are not conscious of the need for it. The world is not indeed all that it might be; human nature is far lrorn perfect. And this means inevitably that situa- tions arise in which hard things are said, ondy nasty things are done. But life is like that. and you have to take the rough with the smooth.

The whole view of man's life as subject to divine law, against lilll('ll man transgresses and thereby incurs the need of lor- gtveness, is a survival from a priniitive stage of fear and super- silllon. It must be replaced by a ixcw which sees in man's natural capacity for discovery and ad- Jitstment to new environment the rnmctiy -for his present distresses, and the hope of deliverance into a new freedom.

it may fairly be asked whether such a view is substantiated by tho experience of those who are ltiusl closely at grips-and that not in the specifically religious spliere-witli the personal prob- ietns of ordinary people. Some of the evidence at least provided by the findings of the doctor, the

psychiatrist. the probation ozficer. the marriage guidance consultant, and the magistrate in the matri- monial court, suggests a different reading of the situation.

On this view it is precisely the fact that men and women are un- willing to extend or accept for- giveness which lies at the root of so much of the unhappiness which these social workers are seeking to runove. This is true on the

purely human level. It is a plain

fact of moral observation that the pride which will not acknowledge wrong done, and the hardness of heart which will not accept such acknowledgment. are the most fruitful causes of the estrange- ment, bitterness. and emptiness which indeed many lives too plain- ly exhibit.

For the Christian the need goes deeper. As he looks out on

the large-scale terror and paralys- is by which mankind es feels itself threatened. he is pelled to ask what power of release

can deal with such a situation.

On motion of Hon. Dr. W. J. P. MaoMillnn, seconded by Mr. Frederick A. Large, Q.C., the Charlottetown Rotary Club went on record yesterday as supporting the proposed visit of Mayor Stew- art and Premier Jones to Ottawa "in an endeavour to secure needed Federal public works in this com- munity."

The subject was introduced at the Club luncheon yesterday by City Councillor Edwin C. John- stone. District Governor of Rotary. who said that Mayor Stewart would appreciate the backing of all the Service Clubs in this con- nection. The Oharlottetown Board of Trade had already passed a similar resolution.

Recalls Sports History

The speaker at Rotary yester- day was Mr. Neil A. Matheson. former sports writer and now news and farm editor for the Patriot. who told about the early days of the Abegweit Club and some of the athletes who had helped to make it famous.

Originally it was formed in the l380's as a football club. one of the original members present at the meeting when the name "Abegweit" was chosen was Dr. ii. if. Shaw and he was in attend- ant-c at Rtotary yesterday.

In 1894 the Junior Abbie: were formed and in 1899 the Abegweit Club won the Maritime Track and Field Championships at Moncton. They had been trained by Tom Ranahan.

In 1921 the Aliegweit Athletic Club had two Olympic champions

on their team In Bill I-lalpenny and Phil MacDonald. llalpenny was considered to be one of the world's greatest pole vaultcrs and while he did not win at the Olympics he did defeat the champions at it later date. He was injured during the Olympic games. Phil MacDonald was the 400 metre man.

Mr. Mathesoti also referred in the famous A-begweit hockey team of 1922 which won seventeen straight games and fnr the season had 30 wins. 1 tie, and 1 loss. He referred also to a number of other champions from the Abbies such as W. Arthur Gaudet. recognized as one of Canada's fastest speed skaters and lion. J. Walter Jones and his famous hammer throws.

A Great Era

During those days there was a great era of real sportsmanship which sometimes seems to be lacking to-day. The speaker hop- ed those days of real sport would return again. No man should consider himself indispensable to a team. A teacher once told him it
