Cricket.—Mr. Oxenham informs us that the boys engaged in playing in the field be- hind Prince Street School on the 17th inst., were dismissed by him by order of the School Board, in his official capacity as Secretary of the Board, and that he informed the boys of that factat the time. Personally, he had nothing to do with the matter.

Mason, who has recently returned from New York, where he has been receiving instructions from one of the best engravers in the United States. The work reflects credit on Mr. Mason. The Coercion Bil Discussed,

Lonpox, May 18. The House of Commons in committee this afternoon began consideration of the second clause of the Coercion Bill, which proposes to extend the scope of summary jurisdiction to include conspiracy, boycot-

ting, resistance to evictions and offences

detined by the Whitb y <Act. Alter several other amendments had been rejected, J. G. Shaw Lefebre moved

to omit from the clause the sub-section making punishable by summary jurisduction conspiracy to induce any one not to fulfil legal obligations, not to use or accupy land, not to deal with or work for any one, or to interfere with the administration of law. The sectiou as it stood he said exposed tenants “to convictioris by summary proceedings not by jury, but by resident magistrates, and deprived them of the ordinary protest afforded laborers and workmen against unfairness on the part of their employers. Hugh Holmes said the section applied only to criminal combina- tions. W.H. Smith moved to apply the cloture rules, which was adopted by a vote of 230 to 143, and the amendment was re- jected.

0 Brien Maltreated. Toronto, May 18. Wm. O’Brien did not leave for Ottawa to-night as intended. About half-past eight O'Brien and his friends left the hotel for a walk. They were followed by a crowd who hooted and groaned and began to pelt them with stones. When they reached Bay Street O'Brien was hit three times but not seriously hurt. Wall, a New York Tribune reporter, and Mr. Cahill. Secretary of the Land League, however, were badly cut aboutthe head. The mob pur- sued O'Brien down Bay Street, and when he took refuge in a blacksmith’s shop they broke the windows and threw stones inside smashing several bicycles. O'Brien escaped by the rear of the shop and was assisted over a twelve foot fence. He escaped and quickly made his way to the hotel. At one time two men got hold of him and would, no doubt, have maltreated him if a police- man had not come to his assistance. Trouble is feared at the station to-morrow morning when O’Brien takes his departure.

The time was occupied in committee on tariff changes. Several amendments were made in details. At the request of Mr. Davies, Sir Charles Tupper brought down to-day the correspondence between the Government of P. E. Island and the Dominion Government respecting the ad- ditional allowance made to that Province. The papers consist of a memorial from Hon. Messrs. Ferguson and Sullivan, and the Dominion Privey Council report recom- mending an additional allowance of $20,- 000.

Navigation Interrupted. Nortu Sypney, May 18.

Large quantities ot ice still surround this coast. While steaming dead slow along the north shore of the Island to-day, the steamer Castledown collided with an_ ice- berg and smashed her starboard plates. She returned to North Sydney for repairs.

The Church of England. Sir,—In a late issue of THe Examiner I saw it stated that the Church of England on this Island was in a very feeble state as compared with the Church in the other Provinces. Now, I would like to know “in what way the Church is so very feeble?” We know here, in Charlottetown, there is much life and strength in the two churches and the reports of the various clergymen speak of the successful work going on in the country parishes.
