The trustees, in presenting a brief report of the receipts and expenditures of the Hospital and its genera! business for the past year terminating this day, are thank- ful tobe enabled to state that although its funda are now low, yet by the good order of God’s providence, the institution has sustaied its good reputation during the

other things, she has opened a cliss for women’s instruction and training if nurs- ing, which now numbers 18, the fees from which, already paid to the Hospital, amounts to $90. This movement has the entire approval of the medical staff, who havé long felt the want of trained nurses in this community. Certain necessary repairs and furniture and sui increase in the salaries and wages have increased last year’s expenditure about $300 over the previous yexr. The assistant nurses and domestics have satisfactorily discharged tiveir duties. The trustees, in closing this report, fee] it imperative on them again to peal public attention to the fact that this year for the firat tine in ite history the annual account shows a balance agsinet the hospital, and the important queatioa erises how are the funds to be proeared, viz, abont cash per month, to sustain the institutioa unless the public generally throughout the whole Island contribute something to its maintenance. This immense tract is nor divided into convenient pasture staions or ranches, the fencing alone cost- ing$50,000. The land is best adapted to rim, sugar, corn and cotton. Ail the cutivating, ditching, ete., is done by stam power, a tract of about a half a mile wile being taken and an engine placed on each side. The engines are portable and wak a cable attached to four plows, the are plowed in this way. with the labor of onl three men, being thirty acres. Har- rowing, sowing, etc., are done in the same way, and there is not a single draft horse on the estate. Horses are, however, used forthe herdamen who look after the 16,000 besd of cattle upon the property, which is traversed for thirty-six miles by the Southern Pacific Railway. The company has‘three steamboats upon the 300 miles of navigable waters which traverse its im-

' How to Cool Guta Trotter. WE MUS? BR RUBBED WELL ALL OVER AND/ DRIED AND THEN BLANKETED. When the horse comes in from his work | rub him ul! over, from his ears te his tail] and gown vo his knees, with wash as meer | the temprrature of his body as possible. To make this wash, take one part alcohol, two parts witch hazel and three or four times as much soft water asthe combined quantity of alcohol and witch hazel. Every muscle should be rubbed thoroughly. Throw a medium weight blanket over the horae now, and let him stand until you have put the bandages on. Use the same wash for the legs as for the body, but have it cold, Atier putting the wash on the legs, rub them well with the palm of the hand, slways rubbing down never up. Put bandages on immediately after the rubbing. Rub all hie heels perfectly dry, with clean, dry rags; care should be taken in this, as cracked heels are very stebborn and often lay'a horse up for the season. Throw the blanket back from his head and scrape out all the wash that remains. Most of it will have entered the pores of the body. Cover up his shoulders and scrape the rest of the®body; take a clean, dry rag and rub him all over lightly, always oe with the hair as much as possible; now put a light hood on him and an extra blanket over his lions, and after looking after his heels again, walk him

Hundreds of women—and men, too, for that matter—who intend going abroad this coming summer, dread the possibility of being seasick, says the Ladies’ Home Jour- nal. Every precaution ever thought of, printed or told, is borne in mind, and many women go on board ship with a quan tity of so-called ** remedies” eaough to kill ten ordinary persons. The simple fact is that no malady is so! little understood by the doctors as seasick. | ness, and no matter what they may recom- mend to quiet the fears of intending voy- | agers there 1s n0 such thing as a remedy. Is there any cause for uneasiness in this?) Not a particle. There is nothing in the world so proluctive of good results as sea- sickness. True, it is unpleasant, but so is any good medicine. If women would auti- cipate seasickness less, they would be more confortable. A good duse of seasickness is the best in- ternal Turkish bath imaginable. You may} feel as if you are going to die, but depend upon it you will not. Asa rule two days ia the limit, and then it is over, and never) will you feel so well Lemons, oranges, champagn2—al! these are recommended, but the best recommendation, the most, practical and common sense, is to let the) seasickness have its way, aud then you are, over with it. You can modify any possible attack by a little care as to diet a day or two before sailing by avoiding greasy and rich foods, ' and this is wise. Bui dou’t go on board with the settled ides that you are going to ba sick. Dismiss the though’. Keep on your feet the first day out, Walk up and down the deck continuously. By this method you get accustomed to the motioa | of the ship, tire yourself out, and if you are any sort of asleepor, you will sleep’ soundly the first night. Then the worst is over. But if not, and you do get sick, just accept it philosuphi- , cally. Ot course you will feel miserable But let the spell run its course and it is done. And you are done fur it and certain- ly wiser than to try to.cure it by a m:xrure of things, which instead of remedying matters irritates the stomach and gives it a| reason for a continuance of proceedings.
