Spinoza, a modern day bard masquerading as a drum and bass punk, wore a bicycle helmet — the cheap variety, largely constructed from compact white foam — the words “born to kill” scrawled on one side, a sticker of a duck on the other. He responded to questions about the helmet by bashing his head into the nearest wooden beam. His bass was disabled before his set began, and the replacement lasted only two short songs. Left with only a drum machine he elected to deliver the show’s most memorable and intense performance, delivering a spoken word monologue about a_heart- wrenching cancer scare..

The show was over too quick- ly, like the infrequent conversations you had with those desirable high- school girls; except where they were so flimsy as to be nearly substanceless, even the air in the basement was thick.

The list of bands appearing includes such rockin’ but often under-appreciat- ed bands as Anti-Product, Seven Days of Samsara, and Submission Hold. I was surprised by how varied yet con- sistently good this cd turned out to be. The musical stylings range from hip- hop (Fermented Reptile) to emo (Remus and Romulus Nation) to spo- ken’... word,. wicked... ‘beat ~ ‘shit (Countdown to Putsch, and Dave Awl) to Atom and His Package’s nerdy elec- tro pop. All of the money made from this CD (after production costs) goes

to the Farm Sanctuary Animal Shelter,

an organization with ranches in New York and California that take in and rehabilitate abused farm animals. For 10 bucks you can’t go wrong with a good cause and such an amazing roster of bands. Oh, and stop eating meat, you insensitive assholes.

Catchy, poppy, indie rock (produced by Ian Mackaye, of all people), with an emphasis on the rock. But not rock as in Rock (guitar poses and shirtless chicks in stadium seats), its more like fuckin’ rockin’. It makes you want to get up and dance, or at least just spazz out like a big nerd. Awesome. Hip electronic new wave for kids who are far cooler and sexier than the original nerds who both founded and listened to old new wave. I’ve seen pictures of these guys and they’re disgusting style monsters who

are all pretentious looking and make me want to punch them and shit (maybe like the Nihilists in The Big Lebowski, you know?) But hell, they make wicked rockin-ass music so I can forgive them for now. Oh, and 3 of the 9 songs on this album are about sex. Holy Fresh.

The curry bratwurst comes in two sizes: one sausage or two. Either choice is accompanied by a mild, but very nice curry sauce, some inedible vegetables held together by what might be mayonnaise, and your choice of potato. I highly recommend the “German potatoes” which are beauti- fully greasy potatoes sliced and fried with onions. A lot of them. The meal, with the exception of the vegetable- mayonnaise catastrophe, is both large and excellent and is highly recom- mended.
