Phoebe stammered absurdly, "Oh wishI” and everybody laughed ex- -Oh goodness, I forgot to make a cept Benjamin Prentice, who leaned forward and said that he had made a wish for Phoebe and he hoped it was the right one, "Well, this is delightful," re- marked Mr. Prentice in his smooth soft voice as the lights came up and Phoebe began cutting the cake. "Yes, indeed, very quaint. I don't know when I've attended an old-fashioned birthday dinner like this. In fact it takes me back to the days when I was a bare- foot boy in overalls." There was something indefinable in Mr. Prenticeb voice that implied ha had travelled a long way from those days he mentioned, and that the party rather amused him. (To be continued)

Well, I left the US. on the some day you left for Canada. My first stop was Etiwitvk in the Marsh-ell Islands. Next was Ulithi-a in the Carolina Islands. Then we leached Okinawa.

From Okinawa I was amigned to a sub chaser, and was striking for Yeomen. I told you all this in an- other letter but that letter is prob- ably lost.

You will read In the papers, hear on the radio and see in the news. reel all about the typhoon we had here. The wind was '70 knots, pretty fast eh? And the waves were big- ger than our ship. Tho s p ls small and all wood. She is l0 ft. long and has a crew of 31, but, the day the typhoon hit us. there were only 2'7 on the ship I was at the helm from 4 to 8 Sunday sftomoon, the 16th, and I could hardly steer the ship, it was so bad. At 9.00, I was in my rack sleeping when the buzzer sounded, boy I flew topside, and grabbed a lifejacket. All I had on was a pair of shorts and sneak. ers. The waves almost knocked me off of the ship but a ready box saved me from going over lhe side. Then they cut a life raft loose as the ship was on a reef amid pgact- ‘lcaliy on her side. When I saw the raft hit the water, I jumped over the side and almost missed it but finally sot in it, and We shot away fmm the ship, the wind and the waves carrying us out of sight of the shi 1n five minutes ‘There were three o us on the raft, and it was really rough going. We finally got in about 300 yards or so from shore and then a wave capsized the raft and I thought, I was a. gunner. I eld 0n to the line of the raft. but then I saw that she was going back outtoseasollet goandtriedto swim in. I had lost my sneakers, and the coral was cutting into my fcct. but the undertough kept pull. ing me out, s0 I laid right down nd held 0n to the coral and then hen a wave came in I will-Lid ride in. I was finally able to walk the est of the way. but my feet and ands were all cut up When I got n the island I called for the others iid after about ten minutes. I ound them both. We got bad! as ar as We could and rested for bout an hour. But rim we thanked he Lord for answering our prayers, elieve mg I prayed while I was on that raft.

After We rested. we decided we ould walk down the beach and trv to find a road, as I was really cold. The other fellows took off their socks and gave them to ms to wear. Then we started and it was touglh going over coral and every- thing. boy it really out my feet. We flmallv made the road and Bot pickled up by a jeep and they took usioaznesshaiiandgotussome coffee and some cigarettes. ‘Iihe Rod Cross gave us a bag, with all-p- pers, cigarettes, towel, soap, every. thing, even socks and candy. Then they gave us clothes. They took and mt the other fellows a sack and then took me to sidx bay where they fixed my feet and hands — than I went to sleep.

from the time we abandoned ship until we were picked up was only six hours but it seemed a lifetime. I was really scared but I wasn't a bit panicky It was a wonder the depth charges didn't g0 off, if they had. the concussion would have killed us.

When I get home I will be able to tell you all about it. It was worse than I could ever say. But don't tvorry as now I nm Okay, my feet sfill hurt, but otherwise I am all right.

At first there were only four of us, but they got a message from the ship this noon and the rest of them couldn’t get off or were afraid to Jump, but they are aii safe. They ‘had planes and everything patroling out to sea for us four, as we were the only four of all the ships, I believe, that were un- accounted for Bur, we finally t to the Navy base and reported afternoon. ‘They had us listed as missing. but I don‘t believe they sent any telegram. But ‘if they did. they probably sent another saying we were Okay
