Basketball Panthers make playoffs for first time in three years

The Axemen won the title last weekend on their home ice against an overmatched UNB Varsity Reds team. The Axemen, which finished the regular season at 19-4-3, beat the Reds 7-3 to take the best of five series two games to none. They won the

opening game in Fredericton 5-3.

The Axemen, after finishing second in the Kelley Division behind the Dalhousie Tigers, have destroyed just about every team they faced in this year's playoffs, outscoring their opponents 45-15. They will now take their skills to Toronto where they will take part in the CIAU Final Four tournament to determine the nation’s top college hockey team. The

Acadia team is heavily favoured to win their second straight national title.

Making UPEI more accessible to all students

on behalf of the UPEI Access-Ability Committee A UNIVERSITY COMMITTEE WAS established in 1991 to explore the needs of students with disabilities and of other students with special needs, Its membership consists of a broad representation from faculty, staff, and students. The UPEI Access-Ability Committee takes action to initiate change on behalf of these students. In its Mission Statement, the committee is committed to: 1) promote and develop the accessibility of students with special needs/disabilities to campus facilities; 2)establish an initial contact with students with special needs/disabilities; 3) establish an information library dealing with issues concerning the needs of people with special needs/disabilities;

4) disseminate information/awareness concerning the needs of people with special needs/disabilities to the entire university community;

5) guide the University administration and Senate with regards to (ALL) areas pertaining to the development of University policies and plans dealing specifically with students with special needs/disabilities;

6) foster a positive and functional University environment for all students with special needs/ disabilities.

These goals have resulted in a number of services and ongoing efforts.

Accessibility to campus facilities has been researched and increased, and is taken into account with any building renovations and plans for new facilities. Improvements include such considerations as wheelchair access,

visibility of steps in the Sports Centre and Library, and legibility of classroom numbers. As well, there have been improvements in designated parking in the campus parking lots. New maps of campus indicate “total accessibility” or “limited accessibility” of facilities and designated parking spaces.

Two brochures are now available from Student Services. ‘‘Accessing Success at U.P.E.I." describes services and resources available on campus and off campus, including useful phone numbers. This pamphlet is designed for students with special needs/ disabilities. A brochure prepared for the entire university community is helping with the vital education process regarding access and other special needs. A Memorial Bursary Fund for Students with Disabilities has been approved. This Student Union Award is now being

There are self-disclosure sections in student application packages and registration kits for students with special needs/disabilities. Students are invited to contact Student Services and/or the Registrar to make their special needs known. Counsellors in Student Services are available to discuss academic and person concerns.

Throughout U.P.E.I. there is now greater awareness of accessibility needs and issues. From the total accessibility of the Sports Centre to an increase in designated parking, the improvements are evident. Still, much remains to be done; for instance, Blanchard Hall is the only residence on campus which can adapt a room to a student who uses a wheelchair. Certain improvements will require major financial commitments. Others can come now through ever-growing awareness, consideration, and assistance from all members of the U.P.E.1. community, as well as available funding.

Case Closed

Case Closed is another book in the continuing story of the assassination of John F. Kennedy. | must admit | had only a mild interest in the Story, but found myself engulfed as | started reading it; however, for journalistic integrity’s sake, | must admit that | have not seen Oliver Stone's JFK movie, and thus my review may Seem slightly one-sided.

The book's objective is to dispel all JFK Conspiracy theories. To this end, the author

examines the life of Lee Harvey Oswald. Oswald is followed through childhood, to the assassination and, ultimately, to his own death. | found this intriguing. The amount of information on Oswald was remarkable. The author also presents the life of Jack Ruby (Oswald's killer) and his role in the story.

This book also examines various conspiracy theories, poking holes in all of them. According to Posner, the movie JFK should not have been made-- because of the instability of Jim Garrison, whose theory the movie was based on.

Overall, the author explains his points clearly. There are also photos and various appendixes to help the reader understand the writer's contentions. The technical explanations are occasionally somewhat confusing, but the only real catch is the length of this book-- it's very intimidating (I was the only X-Press staffer to even attempt to read it!). The book is six hundred pages long (including all notes and index). -

Posner appears to dispel all other conspiracy theories. His point of view seems objective and his arguments are logical. Of course, if you are a conspiracy buff, this book

is not necessarily for you. Personally, | recommend this book for those who want to learn about the assassination. This book is not the final word, but it does present a very convincing anti-conspiracy argument. It’s definitely worth reading if you have any interest in the subject.

Dreams of a Final Theory is the latest publication by Steven Weinberg concerning his many beliefs and accomplishments involving the field of theoretical physics. In Dreams of a Final Theory, Weinberg explains science’s ultimate goal of discovering the ‘final theory of nature’. Reaching back into the past and far ahead into the future, he describes how this quest has taken shape, and the many obstacles that have, to the present, been overcome.

Steven Weinberg’s work has resulted in a great many awards, his most valued being a Nobel Prize for his work in theoretical physics. In Dreams of a Final Theory, Weinberg presents with great clarity the remaining challenges facing the scientific community in its search for a ‘final theory’. Weinberg also goes into detail about how the discovery of sucha theory will affect our religious and spiritual beliefs.

Because of the enormous volume of work done in the name of science since the 1600's, many of our most sacred religious beliefs have come to be questioned. Over time, religious faiths from all parts of the world have come into conflict with science’s motives and goals; none being more obvious to us here on P.E.|, than science’s struggle with Christianity. In Dreams of a Final Theory, Weinberg states that only time and the eventual discovery of an ultimate law of nature will prove or disprove the existence of a God.

Dreams of a Final Theory is a very educational and enlightening piece of work. This is very important reading for all theoretical scientists, or those simply looking for answers about our place in this universe.
