Finger in Chili Case Concludes

A couple from the suburbs of Las Vegas received court sentences this week for attempting to extort money from Wendy’s Restaurant after claiming they found a finger in a cup of chili. Anna Ayala, the finger finder, was sentenced to 9 years in a state prison. Her husband, Jaime Plascencia, who obtained the finger, received 12 years.

Ayala stated to police after the incident. “There’s no words to describe what I felt. It’s sick, it’s disgusting...just knowing there was a human remain in my mouth is tearing me apart inside.”

She and her hubby later pleaded guilty and admitted it was all a hoax. The two realized they were in hot water when forensic scientists found the finger had not actually been bitten into. Also, the fact that the finger was not cooked. The finger was purchased from a co-worker of Plascencia for a $100, who lost it ina paving accident.

The penalty of this crime seems slightly harsh for most of the public. To help understand how California’s judicial system looks upon a crime of this sort, I took it upon myself to compare it to other crimes. punishable by imprisonment in the state prison for two, four, or six yeats. Also, every person who unlawfully and maliciously deprives a human being of a member of his/ her body, or disables, disfigures, or renders it useless, or cuts disables the tongue, or puts out an eye, or slits the nose, ear, or lip, is guilty of mayhem. Mayhem is punishable by imprisonment in the state prison for two, four, or eight years. After reviewing the facts, it may be difficult to see why pulling the old finger in the chili trick is considered worse than gouging someone’s eyes out.

Perhaps taking on a major corporation isn’t a great idea. Fortunately, there is an upside to this case. Police reviewed a recorded jailhouse phone call and discovered that Ayala boasted about being asked for an autograph while in jail. It’s good to know that she won’t have any problems making friends on the inside.
