(NC) — “Most Canadians think AIDS is someone else's problem. They are sadly mistaken.

HIV/AIDS continues to exact an enormous toll on our society. The total cost to date for the care and treatment of people living with HIV/AIDS amounts to some 36 billion dollars. Most devastating is the loss in terms of human life. More than 15,500 AIDS cases have been reported in Canada and an estimated 42,000 Canadians are living with HIV. Between 11,000 and 17,000 Canadians do not know they are HIV-positive. Each year as many as 5,000 Canadians - primarily heterosexual women, Aboriginal people, injection drug users and youth (particularly young gay men) — may be contracting HIV each year, without realizing they're at risk.

The Faces of HIV/AIDS

This preventable virus that we have known about for over a decade is spreading. Each year an increasing number of women, gay and straight youth, Aboriginal people, and injection drug users are becoming infected. The rising rate of infection means there is an increased need for care and support for people living with HIV.

One way or another, we're all affected by AIDS. I urge everyone to play safe, to learn more about HIV prevention, and to help reduce the spread of this devastating disease.”
