At the Stipendiary Magistrate’s Court this forenoon, John Doyle, arrested on complaint of John Larter for stealing a boot, pleaded guilty, and was sentenced to three months’ imprisonment with hard labor. This is the fifth time the same culprit has been convicted for larceny. He is but fifteen years of age. Felix Hughes appeare:l for allowing a nuisance to exist on his premises. He was fined five cents and costs, and $1 pending for every day the nuisance remains unabated.

A meerima of those of our citizens who are interested in aquatic matters was held at the office of Messrs. F. T. & W. L. Dean, last evening. The object of the meeting was to appoint a committee of management for a regatta, which will be held on the Hillsborough on arrival of the flagship Bellorophow, which will be in on or about the last week of August. The mocting was organized by appointing T. B. Alchorn, Esq., to the chair, and A. Lord, Esq., secretary and treasurer. Brief speeches were made by a large number of the young gentlemen present, and a committee was appointed to solicit subscriptions to carry out the project. At the close of the meet- ing the sum of seventy-six dollars was sub- scribed by those present. This shows that a lively interest is already taken in the re- gatta, and betokens that it will be an im- mense success.

A grand temperance convention of the Catholic T. A. Union of this Province and delegates of the societies affiliated to the Union is being held in this city. At ten o'clock a. m. to-day a Pontifical High Mass was held in St. Dunstan’s Cathedral by His Lordship Bishop McIntyre, assisted by the Revs. J. Phelan, R. McDonald and C. McDonald. The delegates and members of the Union were present and occupied seats in the central aisle. At the first Gospel the Rev. Ronald McDonald ascended the pulpit and delivered an eloquent temperance sermon, a summary of which we will present to our readers in to-morrow’s issue. At the end of the Mass, the Papal Benediction was pronounced by the Bishop. The Convention met in St. Patrick’s Hall at 2 o’clock, p. m. There were sixty-five delegates present, in- cluding the members of the Union. We re- gret that we have not space tor a _ report of the proceedings in this issue.

A cass of mistaken identity occurred at Summerville, Georgetown Road, last week, by which a resident of that vicinity received a castigation which leaves him unfit to at- tend to his business up to the present time. It appears that the brother of the person who received the castigation had some of the farmers of Georgetown Koad punished for an assault in the fall of 1877. They claimed that they were unfairly dealt with in the matter, and have since been seeking retaliation. One evening last week five of ** the unjustly prosecuted ” met a farmer at a tavern in Summerville, who bore a striking resemblance to the ‘‘ unjust prose- cutor.” They attacked him at sight ; beat him in an unmerciful manner, and left him lying unconscious on the road. He was re- moved to his home and for several days his recovery was despaired of. The assaulters have since discovered that the person whom they so cruelly assaulted was none else than the brother of their ‘“‘unjust prosecutor.” The matter will be tried before 'Theoph Des- Brisay on Friday.

Austrian authorities expect considerable trouble in Herzegovinia and Bosnia and are even prepared to encounter armed resist- ance similar to the Rhodope insurrection. Arrangements have been made for an ad- vance of strong reinforcements to the fron- tier and neighboring garrison towns.

The Turks displayed a very unyielding disposition in negotiating about the occupa- tion. Archduke John Salvator, of Tuscany, has been appointed to the command of the division of the army of occupation.

This appointment is believed to have some connection with the future adminis- trative arrangements.

Lonpon, July 25. ia the Commons this afternoon, Lord Northeote announced the betrothal of the Duke of Connaught, Queen Victoria’s third son, and Marie Louisa, of Prussia, daughter of Prince Frederick Charles.

The Chancellor said he would move, on Wednesday, the provisions of a grant for the Duke.

Sir Charles Dilke gave notice that he would submit an amendment reciting that there is no constitutional precedent for such application.

The Mark Lane Express in its review of the corn trade says the crops are ripening rapidly under the bright sunshine.

A continuance of such weather as we are now experiencing will go far to repair the injury by prolonged floods in may.

The Queen has conferred an Order of the Garter on the Marquis of Salisbury.

In the House of Commons, to-night, Gladstone moved that the action of the Indian authorities, in regard to the verna- cular press in India, being placed under Par- liamentary control, be ratified.

A long debate followed, and closed with }a division on the motion, which was reject- red by a vote of 208 to 152.

All these efforts to sell coai by such means are only so many admissions on the art of those who make them of the sranDARD character of SYDNEY COAL. It has come to the knowledge of the Asso- ciation that in frequent instances parties giving orders to truckmen and others for SYDNEY COAL have been furnished with other and inferior coal. The Public are cautioned against permitting themselves to be imposed apon in this way.

Every vessel loaded at THE SYDNEY MINES is furnished witha certificate of her cargo being Sydney Coal. Parties purchasing should satisfy themselves by demanding the production of this certiticate.
