Corner Loarinc.—Some persons living in the vicinity of the corner of Fitzroy and Edward streets, Cc mplain of the corner loafing nuisance in that neighborhood. A correspondent, in requesting that we call attention to the nuisance, remarks that ‘‘al- though an officer of the law lives in the neighborhood, the nuisance goes on un- abated. People do not understand how it is that this is the case, although some think that it is owing tu the fact of his re- sidence not fronting on the street. How- ever this may be, the general impression is that the officer should either move his residence or the loafers.” The officer in question will doubtless lose no time about moving the loafers.

At His Ovp Tricks AcaIn.—A_ promin- ent member of the police force dropped into the Salvation Army Barracks on Satur- day evening last (as was his wont in former times) just to see what was going on. He iad been inside but a few moments when he became very much interested in the p indeed, some of those who uoticed his actions thought he was con- sidering the advisability of mounting the platform and taking a seat with the ‘saved.” But if such was his idea he did not act upon it, and shortly left the harracks. Just] after leaving he missed his badge, which, during his period of abstrac- tion in the Barracks, a young woman pre- sent had removed from iis resting place on his manly breast. All day Sunday the officer mourned the loss of his insignia of office, which was not found till yesterday, when it was enclosed in an envelope and returned to him at the Police Station. The

Sir Alexander Tilloch Gait had an inter- view with the Minister of the Interior at Ottawa, the other day, with reference to the extension of his railway from Lethbridge to Wort Benton, work on which will be begun in the Spring. This is good news. Sir Alexander was the first to work coal in the Northwest, a discovery which was hailed with satisfaction and has proved a profitable investment to him.

The Commons had a brief session to-day, there being nothing on the order paper to call for lengthy discussion and no other business of importance coming up.
In answer to Mr. Perry, Hon. Mr. Foster stated that the Government of P. E. Island had, on the Ilth January, 1889, drawn $200,000 of their capital account from the Government of Canada for local improve- ments. He would not say before the esti- mates were submitted whether or not there would be an appropriation for a subway.

A Sensational Article

A great sensation was caused in religious and political circles to-day by an article in LaMinerve, headed ‘** The Jesuits, L’ Etend ard and the Federal Ministry.” The paper says the Ultramontane party have been attacking fur years the best Catholics in this Province, and six members of the Dominion Ministry, and asks if the report be true that the Jesuit order sympathized with these attacks. La Minerve warns these men, who, although doing so much in the past for Canada, to beware, as the time may come when they will reap what they have sown.
Bloody Palings and Posts. Dupuy, Feb, 4.
The police at Gweedore have taken pos- session of numerous palings and posts which they propose to use in evidence when the murder of Inspector Martin is_ in- vestigated. The posts are covered with gore and blood. Martin made a vigorous defence. In the affray seven constables were severely cut and one officer had his lips split open. Father McFadyen sub- sequently surrendered to the police and was committed without bail. The Corporation Council adjourned to-day without trans- mitting business, asa mark of sympathy for O'Brien.

The Secretary of State to-day received a cable message from Mr. McCoppin, United States Commissioner to the,Melbourne Ex- position, saying the Federal Council of Australia las adopted an address to the Crown, viewing with deep anxiety the re- cent events in Samoa, favoring treaties, guaranteeing the independence of Samoa, and expressing the opinion that foreign dominion of Samoa endargers the safety of Australia.
Glace Bay Mining Company.

The Glace Bay Mining Company have declared a five per cent. dividend. An offer of D. J. Kennedy, on behalf of an American syndicate, to buy out the com- pany at 75 cents on the dollar par value of shares was declined. Thus the Glace Bay Company refuses to be swallowed up by the monopoly that seeks to control the Cape Breton coal mines.
Principal Grant’s Lecture. Orrawa, Feb. 4.
Principal Grant delivered an eloquent lecture here to-night on ‘‘ Canada, Austra- lia and Great Britain.” Referring inci- dentally to Canada’s progress since Con- federation, he said the only link required to bind all the provincesof Canada toge- ther was the subway between P. E. Island and the mainland.
Premier Mercier’s Bill. Quebec, Feb. 4.
Mercier intruduced a bill this afternoon, doing away with the clause which provided for the forced conversion of the debt. The Premier said he had pursued this course for fear the Dominion Government would dis- allow the Bill. He was probably scared by the Minister of Justice’s communication the other day.

There is talk of a deal between the com- peting lines of steamers to Bostun. Some directors of the new Halifax Line have just returned from Boston, where, it is reported, they arranged the preliminaries, if not for amalgamation of the two companies, at least for a pooling of freights.
