our surroundings today-of quiet resting farmlands bathed in a De- cember sun. of lines and tiers of dark trees along the hills await- ing with due solemnity, we fancy. the arrival of winter. There was is glint in the pond and a gleam as of summer in the stream which flows quietly by the wooded areas that at Alderlea is "up the creek" to the west.

Towards this. one of Nature's unspoiled sancturies as yet. we watched a pair of wild ducks wing at sunset. Into the flooding colors of rose and flame they flew until no dark specks they faded from sight. James stopperl a minute in the yard to comment regretfully: "It's just too bad, Ellen there's ever an open season on the like of those. I like to see them about . . . and once a hunter bothers them. why they're gonel "I mind when it was not unusual to see several families swimming and playing in the stream. Indeed many a time they lifted quickly to startle the horses as we came by one or the other of the bridges. But wasn't it a nice sight to watch them. the little ones so smart and bright about their elders? And now" he shook his head. "about all that's left of the wild life that once was around are the skunks and foxes, and we could very well do without those!"

Many of us may wonder why physicians today are using more quietlng drugs than ever before. but you have only to look about you to see how tensed practically all of us are these days. The quietlng drug is not, prescribed so much for pain or even for loss of sleep, but to remove tenseneas. This not only tires. but raises the blood pressure which may result in heart or brain strokes. If a physician finds that cares and bur- dens are of such a nature that the patient cannot bear them. he may prescribe a non-habit.-forming drug to enable him to remain relaxed to some extent and so not put too much work on heart and blood ves- sels.

As the drugs used to quiet the nerves and give relaxation may gradually lose their effect or may be habit, forming, your physician may find it necess.'u'y to advise operation, the cutting of nerve gangllons, (bunches of nerves). re- laxing the muscle or elastic coat of the blood vessels and so lower- ing the blood pressure in a more effective manner.

This operation. considered a last resort in trying to prevent, strokes, is now in use all over the world. reports coming in almost daily of the success and occasionally non- success of this method.

The follow-up studies after two to 51 months (average 18 months) showed that while 25 per cent of the patients still maintained their low pressure. 66 per cent had been relieved of their disabling symp- toms to such an extent that they had returned to work.

Remember, operation is a last resort and may never be necessary if blood pressure is high.

ORANGE CREAM CHEESE FROSTING

cone 4-oz. package cream cheese. 1 tablespoon orange juice, 3 cups sifted confectioners' sugar, IA tea- spoon grated orange rind.

Blend the cream cheese and orange juice. Add the sugar grad- ually. blending it in well. Add the grated orange rind and blend again.

PINEAPPLE CREAM CHEESE FROSTING

One 4-oz. package cream cheese. 1 tablespoon crushed pineapple with juice. dash of salt, 3 cups sifted confectioners' sugar.

Blend the cream cheese and pineapple. Add the salt. Add the suglilar gradually, blending it in we .

BLACK WALNUT CREAM CHEESE FROSTING

One 4-oz. package cream cheese. 1 tablespon milk. 3 cups sifted confectioners' sugar, vi teaspoon black walnut flavoring.

Blcnrl the cream cheese and milk. Add the sugar gradually, blending it in well. Add the flav- oring and mix again.

She has learned respect for her elders and consideration for her juniors. She is skilled in the household arts of cooking, sewing and budgeting. She is well groomed-not flashily dressed. She has a sense of responsibility to her family. church and community.

I-Ier marriage will be undertaken as a life Job-not a fleeting ad- venture. She will be A capable, faithful wife. Can anyone ask for more? So be proud of your heritage and your family.

DEAR DOROTHY DIX: A few weeks ago I met an old friend by accident. He lost his wife almost a year ago. and during our con- versation he told me he was very lonesome. I wanted to ask him to give me a ring on the phone. but didn't have the nerve. I think he felt the same way but was a little timid. Now I nm sorry I didn't ask him. I am single and lonesome. too. We are both settled people. He has no phone and I am not in a position to entertain male com- pany. I thought of writing him but am afraid he may think me bold. Would you please advise me how to go about the situation?

ANSWER: Your best opportunity to write your friend would be to extend an invitation. Perhaps you know of a small party in the offing to which you could ask him: or a church social or card party. Anything of this sort would provide a good opening wedge. If he doesn't reply. or refuses the invitation. at least you've tried. but he probably will be delighted at the chance of pleasant companionship. A greeting card for the holidays might also help break the ice. With so much activity available during the next few weeks. I'm sure you'll have no trouble finding an occasion for A note.

DEAR MISS DIX: I am soon going to be 13. and am in the seventh grade. Most of the children I know go to the show with a bunch of girls or a boy once in a while on Friday night. I asked my mother if I could go and she told me to write to you. I can do whatever you think best. Thank you. 1 L A

ANSWER: While very occasional evening outings may be per- mitted. in general I think such excursions should be deferred until you are finished with grade school. Since you are abiding by my advice. I recommend that you be allowed to go with the girls on Friday night for a special occasion. such as a very good report card from school, and then only on the promise to be home not later than 10 o'clock. You should not come home alone. V

In refusing to allow you privileges enjoyed by other children in your ,nelghborhood or school. your parents are concerned only with your welfare. Later in life you'll appreciate their consclentlousness morfdfully. Right now it may seem hard on you. but the years pass quic y.

"Yes." There was not the slight- est change of expression, no tinge of self-pity on the woman's face.

Although she had never before looked so, in the wit- ness box she looked like a servant. After the smart severity of Vic- toria's clothes. bulging black purse. were the hands of the insecure. She looked terribly frightened.

Her voice came out with an effort, her pnllid eyes blinked behind her glasses. she frequently had to pause before answering, and while she paused she wet her soft sag- ging lips with a furtlve tongue. The faces of the jury watched her at first with slightly condescend- ing amusement which changed to interest as her testimony regard- ing the destruction of the poison came out reluctantly. After that matter had been made clear. the coroner's gray lips asked crisply: "You filled the sugar bowl that was on the table On the night Mr. Hime died?" "Yes, sir." "When?"

During the evening Rev. Mr. Christie read a nicely worded ad- dress and on behalf of the people of Hunter River and vicinity pre- sented each of them with an oc- casional chair.

Mr. Athington Seller, in remem- brance of that happy day fifty years ago presented his brother and wife with a beautiful travel- alarm clock, and the t A of the choir of the United Church presented them with a beautifully bound family Bible, in appreciation of Mr. Seller's long and faithful service in the choir.

Their family presented them, as a token of love and esteem, with a floor lamp and electric clock, an that as the days of their well spent lives tick off. on the clock, the lamp will be there to give them light at eventide.

A memorable evening was brought to a close with the singing of "Blest Be the Tie That Binds". Mr. and Mrs. Sellar have now left to spend the winter months with their daughter in Nova Sco-

The evening was spent in happy chat and considerable reminiscing by the older folk.

Tea and delicious refreshments were served from a nicely appoint- ed table which was simply decor- ated in silver and white and cen- trod with a lovely wedding cake. and over which their daughter- in-law, Mrs. Orville Sellar presided.

Hazel hesitated. She squinted. She lenncd a little forward, peer- ing intently through the thick lenses of the rimless glasses which sharpened her world so visibly. "Sugarl" she announced trium- phantly.
