Robert Bruce, King of Scotland. died in ms of leprosy before he could carry out ids ambition to visit the Holy Land.

On his death bed. the king asked his friend, Sir James Douslas to remove his heart after his death and take it to the Holy City of Jerusalem.

Sir James undertook the long trek. with the klngs's heart in his pocket. on the way he stopped to help the Spaniards in a crusade against the Moors. The outnumber- ed Christians were attacked and beaten.

Scattered about the world are a number of freak rivers and streams that are not at all what they seem. Unusual chemical pro- perties in those streams or in the soil over which they run. cause the curious conditions which I now set down for your entertainment and I hope education.

Housewives living near Lough Erral. in Ireland. are especially lucky. It's water contains so much sub-carbonate of soda that it is virtually a lake of soap. Clothes are washed in it without using scan or detergents!

Then there's the amazing river in Algeria. known as the River of Ink. Here British troops filled their fountain peas in the second World War. It really is a river of ink thick enough for writing. strange but true.

Two streams mix ink- the river is formed by the union of two streams. one contains a lot of iron and lead oxide. and the other is impregnated with galllc acid. The two mixed together provides the inky mixture.

In central Indiana there's a

small stream that smells and feels like glue, and South Amari- ca has its Vinegar River- so nam- ed because its water is sour to the taste. Another South American river near the Chile-Argentina houndry is called the Acid River. If you add a little sugar to a glass of water drawn from it you get a beverage similar to lemonade.

In Memoriam EDWIN RUSSEL MICLEOD

The community of Uigg was deeply shocked with the news of the very sudden death of Edwin Russel MacLeod, son of Mr. and Mrs. W. S. MacLeod on May 6th. I955 in his 42nd year.

The deceased was employed at Blackville, N. B.. where he was taken suddenly ill and, before medical ' could be ob- tained. passed suddenly away of virus pneumonia.

He was a veteran of Woild War II and was wounded in action. hospitalized in England for some time; from which injury it was felt he never recovered the full strength of his young manhood.

After a period of two years spent at home with his parents. he ac- cepted a position with a construc- tion company in New Brunswick with whom he was employed at. the time of his death.

Funeral services, which were from the United Baptist Church. Ulgg. May 9, 1955 were conducted by Rev. C. E. Armstrong. assisted by Rev. John Scheen of Vernon River.

Members of the Canadian Legion were in attendance and partici- pated in the service at the rave.

"When you go back to the spot where you broke with God's will, you will find 'the lay of His salvation' waiting for you." The return of the ” kslider is a feature of every true revival. We recall a preaching mission in the Fraser valley when one "old- timer" of the West welcomed a call to return. As a boy in his home-church in the East he had confessed his faith in Christ. but when he went to the West. he found no church waiting for him, and he drifted away from the religious life that he always re- garded as the supreme good.

But when the call came to re- turn to a real life in God he responded gladly, and the old "Joy of God's salvation" filled his soul.

it is a common criticism of all evangebtic effort that many who profess conversion soon fall back into their old ways. once a lead- er of an oldifashioned camp meet- ing in Eastern Ontario was asked for his estimate of the number of converts who would stand firm. He replied that if 15 per cent. of those who "came forward" con- tinued in the faith he would con- sider tha series a success.

CAUSES VARIED

The cause of those failures are many and varied. One is that many individuals are carried away with the emotions of the mass. and with the crowd make decision that they cannot carry out in personal life. Once a Toronio- paper carried an editorial entitled The Spirit of the crowd and the Man. A mob had been broken loose in neighbor- ing city and had smashed win- dcws and had broken up things generally. The writer pointed out that most of the people in that crowd were ordinary citizens who personally. would not harm a neighbor for the world. but the mob spirit had swept them into actions the very opposite of their personal convictions.

Of course, the failure of the church to bring a convert into a new spiritual fellowship may be to blame for many such failures. Unless a revival movement is prepared for in advance by the church and followed up closely with all the means at her dispos- al, a special movement can have few permanent results.

Another cause of the back-sliding is the natural reaction that fol- lows the first joy of conversion. In the hymn from which we have quoted. the poet Cowper com- plains that he has lost a joy that once he had. His Christian life started this way. He had turn- ed to the Bible for comfort when in a fit of deep depression, and his eye had fallen on the verse in Romans 3:25 which reads: "Whom God has set forth to be a propitiat- ion through faith in His blood."

Immediately he had faith to re- ceive it, and the completeness of the Salvation provided through Christ filled his soul with a joy

Profeaser A. B. Bruce illustrat- ed this way. The Joy of con- version is the blossom stage of the Christian life, where all is beauty and fragrance and com- mands the admiration of those who see it. But the blossom stage is followed by the sour-fruit stage where there is no beauty nor flagrance nor anything that commands attention.

But the sour-fruit stage of the spiritual life is a real advance on the blossom stage for there the will comes in to hold the believer to the best he knows and drives him to use the means God pro- vides for 'he support of the new life.
