The ealm, resolute tones of the stranger have their weight with the mystified Ray. Instinctively he feels the power of the man end the weight of the argument.
‘*What do you wish to know, sir?’’ he Says, quietly. “I am ready to serve Clifford Heath."’

“Thank you,’’ retorts Ray, rather stiffly. ‘‘It will be a relief to me, if you can do so. Can I answer any more ques- tions, sir?’’
‘‘Not to-night. And, Mr. Vandyck, as a friend of Clifford Heath's, we ask you to help us, and to share our confidence. Now, we must find out first, if Constance Wardour is engaged to Lamotte; and second, the cause of the estrangement be-

In the gray of the mornimg, Sybil dropped iato one of her lethargics after hours of wineasy mutterings, that would have been mad ravings but for the doc- | tor’s persverful opiate; and then, afters word e#wmbet with Mrs. Lamotte, just such am. argument as has occurred by hundreds of sick beds, where twe weary, anxiows avatchers vie with each other for | the plase beside the bed, and the right to wateh in weariness, while the other rests; after such anargument, Mrs. Alis- | ton yielded to the solicitations of her | hosteas,.and withdrew, te refresh herself with a little sleep.
The vigil had been am unusual one, and Mas. Aliston was very weary. No sound disturbed the quiet of the elegant guest Chamber where she lay; and so it happened that a brisk rappimg at her door, at ten o’clock im the anorning, awoke ixr from heavy, dreamiess slum- ber, amdsset her wandering wits to won- dering waguely what all this strangeness meant. Then suddenly recalling the events af the previous night,-le sat up in bed and called out:—

Halfan hour later the Lamotte car- riage reilled swiftly agross the bridge and towards Wardour; and.o Mrs. Aliston, for the time at least, was spared the shock that fell upon the house of Maple- ton, scaree fifteen minutes later—the news ef John Busrrill’s murder, and the finding of the body.

The outer door stood wide oper, and a growp of servants were baiddled alout the door of the draw- ing raorn, with pale, affrighted faces, and parme-stricken manner.
Seeing them, Constance at onee takes the alarm, Sybil must be worse; must be very fil indeed. Instantly the question rises to her jine-—

Over twenty-five years I have been in the Spectacle bus- inoss and during that time have fitted hundreds and hundreds of persons. Some had put off getting glasses so long that they could not s2e a large 4 inch letter A without going within 2 or 3 feet of it, and might have gone blind if they had put off getting glasses much longer.
