Stuart, the popular Pre-byterian clergyman, If you are out in this section and wish to hear a really good practical sermon, be sure and attend the Wood Island Church. Wood Islands is a pretty place, with many good tarms. Here are the MeNeill’s, the MeMillan’s, the Taylor’s, etc., galore, all men of firm physique, and having all the character- istics or the true Higtland race.

We must proceed west and come to Belle Creek. The laad of the Bell’s, the S.uarts, the Martins, the Comptons, the Saunders, the Bears, the McDonald’s, etc. A pier or breakwater bas Leen constructed here, mostly by the private resources and energy of the people. The Local Govern- ment spent a little money trying to im- prove it. Itis yet far from being svfti cient for the shippivg requirements of the surrounding country. Iltisa grcat pity it was not cousidered of sufficient import- ance to be eesumed by the Dominion Govy- ernment. Some say that “Creek” at the end of the name had a misleading effect. If so, the name should be changed. Here is the residence of Donald McLaren, E-q, merchart, and a compact and well-finished house itis. Heand Mre. McLaren, are, however, well worthy of it, and though comparatively recently bvilt, it has sheit- ered the tired traveller on many, many occasions. Their son Dr. McLaren, has moved west to British Columbia, where their only daughter is the happy wife of Mr. Mann, formerly of Little Sands, who is now thriving in his western home. This is the oldest settlement of the group. The Belle, Stuarts, Martians and McDongalls, were the first settlers, when the place was well wooded. Blood-curdling adventures with bears were common in those days, when the stalwart forms of the original settlers could almost any day be seen chasing bruin to his lair with a pitch-fork or an axe. There were giants in those days, and their descendants bear honest testimony of it tothe present day. As a class, the farmers are conservative and frugal. They are all comfortably well off, which may be the reason they are in- clined to leave well enough alone, and averse to radical changes. Mr. Donald Comptou has here a lobster packing establishment. He is enterprising and deserves success. Here also lives Capt. Alex. McDougal, whose sons are, with several schooners, active in the coasting trade. Further on is Flat River, the home of the McKenzies, the Rosss, the Bea- tons, the *Nicholeona, the Morrisons, the Blues, the McDonalds, etc. The only and leading merchant is Capt. McKenzie, who has quite a Jarge establishment. His business is extensive and includes many customers from all sections. Here also hospitality is dealt out with no meagre or unsparing hand. Loxpow, Dec. 16.—The Times publishes a despatch from Rome saying that wili- tary circles there are strongly of the opin ion that Great Britain stands sentinel at Zeila,on the Gulf of Aden, as the guar dian of Ras Makonnen’s interests, enabl- ing him to unite with King Metelik for an attack on General Baratieri, The des- patch adds that there is strong feeling growing in Italy that the Italo-British en- tente is a failure.

Chicago, Dec. 16 — The Chicago uni versity to-day was the recipient of another $} 000,000 gift, the donor being Miss Helen Culver of this city. The conditions are that it shall be devoted tothe increase and spread of knowledge within the field of biological science, or the sum donated may

Sr. Joux, December 16 —The exhibi tion association management has sub- mitted an account of this season’s fair. The total expenditure was $23,000, of which over $11,080 was for buildings and capital outlay. The receipts of the fair were $15,000. To meet the shortage of $8,000 there were «ubsidies of $3,000 from the city and $1,000 from the province, and a guarantee of $3,000 each from the city and province. As the management will leave $2,000 of the guarantee un- touched, and has $8,600 or $10,000 worth of plant available for next year, the report is considered very satisfactory.

The nationalities of the British army, according to the newly issued blue book, are thus classified: 163,000 Englishmen, 16,000 Scotchmen and 26,000 Irishmen. As regards the religions denominations, it appears that the Church of England claims 145,000, the Roman Catholic Church 37,000, the Presbyterian Church 15,000 and the Wesleyan Charch 12,000.

The Prince of Wales has given a church to Babingley, which forms part of the ex- treme portion of she royal estate of Sand- ringham. Babingley is reputed to be the parish where the first Christian church was erected in East Anglia by St. Felix the Burgundian, about the year 600 A. D.

The Imperial Parliament will meet on February 11.
