The St. John Gazette condemns the sending of mere boys to the Penitentiary. It seems that some of the counties of New Brunswick are still—like this Province without a Reiormatory.

They have caught an interesting . per- son at St. Stephen, whose business for some time past has been incendarism. His jast exploit was an attempt to burn the St. Croix Mill. Itis to be hoped that his punishment will be commensurate with the offence.

The Johnstown calamity is said by ob- servers to have destroyed the slin chance of carrying the prohibitory amendment to the State constitution to be voted on this month. Coming just when popular inter- est was being developed in the tight, it practically obliterated all other issues, and has left the prohibition baryue badly strand- ed. Itis now fegarded as certain that Pennsylvania will follow the example of Massachusetts and go wet.

The way the Empire's rapid growth im- presses people is well expressed by the Ridgetown Standard: ‘*The Toronto Em- pire, which possessed the fastest press in Canada, has found it necessary to put ina second, owing to the increase in its circu- lation. The Empire is without doubt the best newspaper in Canada, and this, we take it, has been the reason of its phenom- enal success—a success without parallel in the history of Canadial journalism. Than it is a Canadian, and not an American journal, like the Mai! and Globe.”

-An editorial in a recent issue of the New York Mail and Express (Col. Shep- ard’s paper) calls ou the loyal men of the north to buckle on their armour and pre- pare for a struggle. Continuing, the edi- tor says : ** The war is coming again. The student of history must be indeed blind and deaf, if he will not see and cannot hear all the deep muttered threats against the life of a nation that come up from the politicians of the Southeast, and vows of vengeance and consecration to the cause of the Confederacy, which they are encourag- ing all through their regions.”

~—They appreciate the advantages of the British consutution in New Zealand. A New Zealand correspondent of Imperial Federati:

** Now we know how easy it is under the British Government for the people to give effect to their wishes immediately, and with no danger whatever to the constitution, after we have thoroughly talked over any import- ant matter in the press and the public meeting. Vhis is an advantage that is not possessed so completely ian America, for we notice how every fourth year that great republic is almost shaken to pieces in the process of simpiy electing its chief magistrate; and as years roll on that frictional derangement becomes worse instead of better.” a

This is true. And yet we hear partizans of the Opposition advocating a policy which must inevitably tend towards annexation to the States, and the exchange of the Brit- ish Constitution for that of the American Republic.

—The Empire remarks that the public should observe one or two fsimple rules re- garding the addressing of letters to mem- bers of the Government—and, indeed, to all high public functionaries—the obser- vance of which will obviate inconvenience. Letters addressed to a Minister of the Crown should, when on public business, invariably have his title in full, besides his name, so that, in his absence, they may be at once opened by the deputy head of the department. Letters to a Minister on pri- vate or purely persunal or family matters should always be marked ‘‘ Private,” in the upper lift hand corner of the envelope and letter, otherwise they are certain of being first opened as official correspondence instead of reaching the Minister directly. Only those immediately concerned can fully understand the loss ot time and the trout ls oecasioned by inattention to these appar- ently trifling details.

—The coroner's jury in the Cronin case at Chicago finds from the evidence before it that the ** Clan-na-Gael is not in har- mony with and is injurious to Ameri- can institutions.” With this opinion the coroner agrees, and adds that, in his judg- ment, the United States Government ought to suppress that society. The Utica, N. Y., Herald remarks that the facts brought out by the investigation establish the un- American character of the Clan-na-Gael, or ‘* United Brotherhood.” The close con-

To-pay being the Feast of Corpus Christi was duly observed by the Catholics of Charlottetown.

At eight o'clock there was Mass for the benefit of the children in the Cathedral, at which about one hundred and thirty little ones received their first Communion. Rev. J. J. Macdonald ofticiated.

The nine o'clock Mass was celebrated by Rev. J. C. McLean.

At ten o'clock there was Solemn High Mass. Kev. Charles Macdonald was the celebrant, with Revs, J. C. McLean deacon, J. J. Macdonald, sub-deacon, and P. A McElmeel Master of Ceremonies. After High Mass there was Procession of the Blessed Sacrament.

This afternoon, at three o'clock, His Lordship Bishop McIntyre administered the Sacrament of Confirmation to about one hundred and forty persons.

There will be Vespers and Benediction this evening at seven o'clock. ——oOeo-——

New York, June 18.—The steamer Car- olina Miller, the craft which figured in the Haytien blockades, left this harbor yester- day for Hayti. It is rumored that several cases of arms have been amuggled on board her, and that a notorious tilibuster and sev- eral other men of that class are among her passengers. ; Lonpon, June 18,.—Parneli’s appeal against the postponemens of his libel suit against the Times, has been disurissed with costs. The appeal court decided that the delay in the trial had not damaged his character, the Times having admitted the libel and paid into court,

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind., June 18.—A de- structive wind storm swept over Peru, In- diana, this afternoon. Trees, fences and telegraph poles were levelled. Many dwellings were injured. The Standard Oil Co’s. large brick warehouse was destroy- - Several freight cars, standing on the Lake Erie and Western tracks, were push- ed with great velocity through the walls of the regular shops. The total loss will amount to many thousands of dollars. Much damage was done to growing crops throughout the country.

JoHNsTOWN, June 18.—The councilmen, this afternoon, reorganized and decided to allow business men to build temporary structures on thetwo public parks of the place, the buildings to remain about a month, when it is thought the city will be cleared up ready for rebuilding houses. Occasionally a corpse is found buried in the debris and rubbish throughout the town. The most prolific spot is a mass of wreck- age above the railread bridge. Eleven bodies were blown up there by blasting to- day.

A correspondent writes :—‘* The settlement of Kingston and vicinity was shocked as the news spread that Mr. Allan McKinlay passed away from this earth to the reward of a life of usefulness and constant activity in the Church of Christ. Mr. McKinlay joined the Baptist church some thirty years ago, in which denomination he has always been a zealous and faithful standard-bearer. After being connected with Clyde and North River Sabbath Schools, about twelve years ago, he organized one in Kingston, of which | he was superintendent until his death, on the } 5th of June. He was a leader in the Kings- ton Church, which was built principally through his strenuous and untiring efforts. Wherever the people met to worship God, | within reasonable distance, there he was to be found, always ‘ready to minister | to the sick and afflicted. In Mr. McKinlay | we have lost a whole-souled Christian man, whose place will not soon be tilled.”
