looking to next year for the ,

The Lady Panthers field hockey season was hilight-' ed by the showing of a fine crop of rookies who should provide a sound nucleaus for Barb Mullay next year. Although losing key players such as Janet Ellis and Mary Bradley, I feel Barb Mullay will have and should have a much better team next year. The highschools on the island produce some excellent talent in field hockey and if last years crop was anything to.judge by them this up coming year should.vault us into the Atlantic finals. Sandy Drysdale had an excellent season in goal and along with rookie Honey McTssac who was a standout neXt season should be even better.

Early in the ‘ seaSon the Panthers had few followers who believ- ed they would do so well as they did. The Pant-ers played 500% ball during '.the final playoff to V St. F. X. after eliminat— ing Dalhousie'in an earlier playoff. The 'Panthers had many factors which attributed to their marked success but

Onenof the main factors in the Panthers excellent showing had to be due to 'freshman quaterback Rick Kiraly. Kiraly cam into training camp just prior to the opening of the season and stepped into the position with authority. The excellent running ability added to the fact of a strong arm posed a double threat to other teams in the league as Kiraly displayed.

rted on the road towards a national championship._ The Panthers_performed above everyone's expectations and provided a great deal of excitement all season. The Panthers started the pre— season by winning the cove- ted Acadia Tip Off Tournam— ent in cenvincing style.
As the season began we defe—

layoff over the Christmas holidays did_little for U.P.E.I. as we lost the finesse we had acquired early in the season. 'With - standouts like Kevin Feigh- ery and Mark Vickers in the back court feeding 6'7" Tom Kappos and 6'5" Ken Rowe the Nationals were only one step away. Over the Christmas holidays the step was accom— plished with the addition of Rick Mallard from Sackville N.B. to back up Dennis High. The addition of Mallard add— ed the extra depth needed ' for a chance at the nation— als. Our sixth place finish in the nationals is just a' prelude to what will happen

a person to fill Kevin Feigh- ery's shoes we will be well on our way to the finals in Halifax. .

.Our fourth pla— ce finish was not surprising as we were expected to reach that plateau from the outset of the season. The hockey teams fine showing in the playoffs against St. F.X.
made all those people who believed the series to be .
one sided eat their words. The hockey team was anything but a pushover for St. F.X. as we felt from this corner that U.P.E.I. could have go— ne to the/finals with a lit— tle luck.
In curling Bruce Nortons rink provided the fans with some excellent games but just failed to win the cham— pionship. Just the opposite happened in girls curling where Gloria Basha shipped her rink through the tourna— ment undefeated to win the Women's Atlantic curling title in convincing style.
Brent Cutcliffe and Kevin McQuad teamed up to win the , doubles championship in bad— mintOn when representing U.P.E.I. in the Atlantic Finals.
Walter Wilkins went to UNB and captured the Atlantic Universities Foil Champion- ship (fencing). Wilkins al- though representing U.P.E.I. had to pay $75 of his own money in order to go. I wonder if the Athletic Depa— rtment could have helped him out in that matter? ‘
