‘The candidates and Mr. Fredk. Peters appeared at this meeting. Dr. MacNeill addressed the meeting and stated that it was fortunate for the Leader and his protege Mr. Warburton, that the convention which had nominated him had passed a few reso- lutions showing some general planks which might serve as ® basis for the legislation of the coming session, that the resolving of the Legislature to one House of Represen- tatives was a duty incumbent on the people of this Province. Farmers should increase the number of cattle they raise, and at the same time en- deavor to improve the breed, The outlook for beef is unnsually bright. The statis- tical position of the article is strouger than it has been for many years, and as the pro- duction cannot be increased rapidly it is certain to remain in that pusition for some yearsto come. The prices of meats of al kinds are advancing ali over the world. The big American exporters saw this when they went in with a Canadian to buy all our cattle they could secure. Hitherto the bulk of States shipments have gone to Great Britain, now other European coun- tries are buyers. It is not improbable that some Canadian cattle will go to France thia year. The National Stockman says: “There has not been within the present generation such s prospect of beef famine in all conntries taken togther as there is at the present time. One thing which is so favorably affecting the outlook for our cattle export trade is that other countries, which have heretofore drawn on different sources of supply, are liable to be cum- pelled to come to us for good beeves at reasonable cost. It is now the case that in many countries of Europe good beef is al- most beyond the reach of people of limited means. Under the circumstances we do not see how beef production can be ary- thing other than a satisfactory industry for a number of years to come.”

In the Brockville section, taking them in rotation from the metropolis, no less than $1,040,000 was actualiy distri- buted in hard cash for cheese through the various districts. One district may be taken as an illustration, but it must be : borne in mind that it was not alone by any means. In the township of Oxford Mills, in the county of Grenville, there is a dis- trict of about ten miles equare. This dis- trict drew, through the cheese industry last season, some $8),000, quite a nice little sum fur # little country district. Three factories alone made $32,900, and as an illustration of the benefits that farmers ac- tually derive, it may be explained that in the dis- trict in question. On an average about 400 cows are tributary to a factory, se that with seven factories this makes 2,800 cows, or abont $30 per cow from the $39,- 000, not aemallitem to a man who keeps from twenty to twenty-five cows, and works on the percentage system. He has very little trouble either for this revenue, simply drawing the milk to the factory, or, in some cases, simply placing a can of it om 4 stand by the roadside to be called for. The cheese from this section are generally fine and usually average more than those from other centres; therefore 67 lbs. to the box is not an excessive figure. This makes, then, 7,175,700 lbs, of chees®, which, at 9ic @ 10c per lb —the ruling figure in the sec- tion—represents the sam of $717,570, quite a nice little quota to the revenue of the farmers; and tuis is only one of the western districts, for what is true of it may be said to apply in a minor degree to the Stratford, Ww tock, Listowel and London districts. These instances are enough to demuustrate fully what an important industry choese making is. The past season diaposed of, it is proper to refer to the new season anid its prospects. So far, they seem favorable enoagh, and, aa intimated at the commencement ot this article, nore of our early make has already found its way to the English markets than in former seasons. The run ao far is in ode- rate, but take the country as a whole it may be set down as up to the average; for in the western country there has been a succestion ef fine days ao veg tation is well advanced, so that the run is good and offsets toa a cer- tain degree the falling off in the more eastern districts, owing to the cooler weather. So far only fodder cheese has been marketed, but the grass make has commenced now, and it will soon be on the market in quantity. Right here it may bs interesting to note that although all our markets have been in operation for fully « fortnight, and one for over a month an a half, the Ingersoll factories being in operation since early in April, the facterics in Northern New York have not offered any cheese to spsak of as yet. So far 10c appears to be the best bid that buyers are willing to make for early cheese; but speaking generally, factorymen don’t seem disposed toaccept it. With the accumulation consequent upon the advancing seasan, how ever, some easing off would not be surpiising

Moncrox’s AsskssMent.—The Moncton assessors report that the total valuation of the city this year will be about $2,700,000, and increase of three-quarters of a million as compared with last year. The increase will, it is estimated, reduce the average rate of taxation from about $1 80, which it was last year, to sbout $149, so that the tax on small property owners will be some- what leas this year than last.
