The sweetness of the violets deep blue eyes, Kissed by the breath of heaven, ceems borrow ed from the skies,

If you are fond of violets, you may still, perhaps, find afew on some cool, damp place. Where the deep shadows of birches and alders, bury the crystal of the brook, there is a little grassy plol always moistened with the spattered dew of the cas- cade. Here the blue violet may stiil be found, blooming sweetly in the shade, while the silent thrush comes to dip his bill in the clear cool fountain,

But the real summer flowers are out in the fullsunshine. How the rich pastures flash with golden buttereups! ‘There are two kinds, the tall Ranuncualis acris with lacer- ated leaves; and the low, creeping Rauunculis repens. Yn the tall grass, of the meadows, too, the fair blue-eyed grass with its pure ultamarine blossom, is found ; also the Prunellas thick purple spike of labiate flowers ; and the little Skull-cap ; and the tall Germander ; and the climbing Vetch with a profusion of blue, thick clustering racemes. The little speedwell, Veronica agrestis, hides in the sward,so rich in migute, pearly blossoms that it spangles the grass, like showers of dew; and the largvi- ger V. officionalia, with blue flowers, which grow so abundantly by the highway side.

Here we have our representatives of

the great Orchid family—ihose grand beauties of ‘the tropical forests. Ours are small, of course, but

interesting. The ladies tresses (Neottic ceruud) grows eight inches high, and has a large spike of spirally arranged, recurved flowers, which emit a pleasant perfume, often scenting the whole meadow, as the mower goes through the grass. The Hab- anaria’ grows two feet high, with a great spike of whitish, orchid flowers with ‘frilled lips.

Our most beautiful erchid, however, Cypripedium spectable, is found under the shade of the beechwood. It has a large, bright purple flower, and beautiful, smooth, ribbed leaves. Here, under the shade of the whispering, leafy arches, where the olive thrush never ceases the rippling music of its lay, there are some lovely floral gems

The Pyrola uniflora, with its round, evergreen leaves, and large, single blossom, is a sweetly scented treasure. Pyrola rotundafolia has a, spike of similar blos- soms, just as fragrant.

The sweet little pink bells of the Linnea are found here; too. The plant has a trailing stem, which spreads delicate ten- drils of evergreen leaves over the moss ; and, even in autumn and winter, its fres- ness is pleasing. But now its profusion «

sweet-scented, delicate little , flowers, two on every tiny stalk, makis it a perfumed treasure of the woodland. Here, also, are the Neobbia tortilis, the Twa-blade, ihe Dragons claw, and the curious, colorless, Dutchman's pipe.

The pale Andromeda, the flashiug Rho- dora, the Ledum, and the Wortleberry flowers are gone ; but the Kalmia makes up for them all. How it ornaments the dusts

highway side, and spreads a blush of beauty over the rude barrens! We are su accustomed to this plant. that we think little of it. But its flowers are really pretty

and they have some peculiarities of struc

ture worth studying, and which Darwin made use of, in his most interesting inves

tigatious regarding plant fertilization.

The Willow herbs are now in full bloom, waving their purple pikes above th

fence tops. They grow best where a wood fire has run; and in such a situation we have seen acres in extent one blaze of deli- cate purple bloom.

Let us leave the wood land now, and seek some neglected border where the wild roses grow. Down by the shore will be the best place. The fresh breeze and the beauty ot the blue wave invite us there. As we go throngh the meadow, and the pasture, the tiny song of the chip sparrow runs everywhere through the grass; and some bob-tailed fledglings flutter in our path.

The clear whistle of the song sparrow rings over the fields, to tell us how love lives in this wor.d. The plover dies away with strong wing, and loud wailing cry, in sym- pathy with the lonely spirit of nature.

How those graceful swallows sweep and circle through the clear heaven, in evolu- tions which make even its arch look more beautiful! What a glory that summer isky is, with its pure white clouds ! You

peer into its loveliness, till you think of things above and beyond.

There is a field of Irises by the pond, a ea of bloom of deeyer ultramarine than the sky: and the great, delicate, piak-stained bells of the Convolvolus float from their climbing tendrils, on the fence top, quiver- ing in the sunny breeze.

Here is were the wild roses grow. They make a thicket clear across the foot of the field. It is a perfect billowy swell of bloom, every rippling spray a flashing beauty of carmine and gold.

AUSTRIA AND HER GAME.

Austria is again trying on the double- shuffle trick. She evidently thinks Eag- laud‘ has uo friends. She is, therefore, determined not to be on her side, and yet not to oppose her openly, for fear of awkward eventualities. All she can do by insinuation and innuendo she does. For instance, the Vienna Fremdendlatt says :—

“<The proposal to establish a European protection of the Suez Canal will be toa certain extent the test of. the honesty of Enogland’s intentions. If England should refuse to concur in the proposal the existing distrust will not be unwar- ranted.”

As England, by representative, has not at once given in her adhesion te the proposal as formulated by Italy regard- ing the protectorate to be established over the Suez Canal, but, like France, has consulted the Cabinet, this ** Austrian distrust ” will probably be increased.

ARABI'S INTRIGUES. There is said to be the best of evidence to show that Arabi is: negotiating with the Palace at Constavticople about a parallel action between his own and the Turkish troops. It is said that he pro- poses that the Turks shall occupy Cairo, while he will remove to some central portion in the Delta provided the Turks promise not to attack his rear. PRUSSIAN OFEICERS FOR TURKEY.

A number of Prussian officers have entered the Turkish army under a con- tract that is to run for aterm of three years, with provisions for a renewal. One of the officers is a Colonel, who takes the office of Brigadier General witha salary of 30,000 franes.. The others are to be Colonels in the Ottoman service, and will receive a salary of 23,000 francs, In addition to this, ali ure to get the nsual ratious and other allowances given to Turkish officers ot like rank. Iu case of disability for service a pension of one- third of the active salary is to be given, and in case of death, a pension of one- half the salary is to go to the widow and children. ‘The officers, moreover, though obliged to wear the ‘Turkish military uniform, will not be required to retounce their allegiance to Prussia. _ They are to continue subjects of the Prussian Gov- ervment, and members of the Prussian army. Both the Tarkish and Prussian Governments asseut tothis. The salaries and pensions are to be paid in gold by the Ottoman Bank.

The New York Churchman. learns that. Sophronius, the venerable Patriareh of Alexandria, has, amid the tryiag scenes which have lately taken place: in Alexandria, shown great heroism, It was believed by many that his life was endangered from Moas!em fanaticism, and he was urged to withdraw. But he felt that, at such a time, bis place was with his flock, and although fourscore, years old, he has been diligent in encouraging those who were threatened, and suceoring those who were oppressed,

The other morning one of the daily papers contained several. notices, of which the following are samples :— Wantep.—Will pay to any one procuring me employment under the Government or otherwise, paying $1200 annually or more or less, percentage in proportion to oe received, payable monthly.
