The progressive attrition of German ranks and the urgent need of sending strong mlnforcements south to meet the Allies’ two-army sweep into the Saar Basin are tending to force the foe into “disengage- ment" action in the north. That is the face-saving German military phrase for an orderly retreat from an untenable position. The ltoer fast is becoming just that.

The point is that German delay in falling buk until Allied for-egg fronting the Boer from Duren to Linnlch or along the Mouse in the Venlo area forced a crossing in strength could lead to u greater dis- aster than the loss of either defensive line.
