student would pay approximately $15.00 a year. It should be noted that the CFS membership fee would also include the cost of an International Student Identification Card (ISIC), assessed as a value of $10.00. The ISIC card can be purchased by non-members for $16.00.

In this case the committee found that CASA held a considerable advantage in cost.

With these five criteria considered, the committee has decided to recommend that the UPEI SU should pursue membership with the Canadian Alliance of Student Associations. To progress towards this end, the committee further recommends that research be conducted by the VP Executive through out the summer in regards to this possibility, that information regarding national representation be presented to students during the first two weeks of school on the fall,

and that this issue be decided by Referendum in the 2007 Fall General Election. As per the

Elections and Referenda By-Law, the question for this referendum shall be voted on by the 2007- 08 UPEI SU Council prior to the election.

Big Brothers Big Sisters PEI is looking for volunteers

extra hours a week to spare, what better way to spend those hours than making a difference in a child’s life.

Big Brothers Big Sisters PEI have been creating friendships on PEI since 1975. Currently there are at least 50 young children waiting to get matched up.

Yvonne Cartner Executive Direc- tor for BBBSPEI says a few hours a week can make a difference in a child’s life.

“Usually the new friends get togeth- er for 2-4 hours a week, it is amaz- ing the difference in a young child’s personality.”

Big Brothers Big Sisters PEI of- fer 3 different volunteer programs. In-school mentoring is when a child and a new friend are matched up in a school setting. This gives anyone the chance to feel like a kid again! You are able to be in a school set- ting, while playing a board game, or shooting some hoops with your

new friend. In-School mentoring only requires one hour each week of volunteering.

Couples for kids give the Seporne nity for a couple to volunteer to- gether. A couple is able to spend time together, while knowing that they are making a huge difference in a young child’s life. Cartner said it is amazing how closer a couple becomes when they volunteer.

Kids ‘N’ Kops operates in the summer for once a week. The Char- lottetown Police department volun- teers to mentor a group of children the many aspects of police work. Kids ‘N’ Kops works to promote trust between Law Enforcement and children.

Cartner said volunteers are asked to make a commitment of a couple of years.

“Most people are asked to remain volunteering for usually at least 2 and a half years. However, many matches remain close friends for years to come,” she said.

Becoming a big brother or big sister

is easy. Volunteers are matched with a child who has similar interests, so both of you will have fun doing stuff that you both already enjoy. If you want to volunteer Big Brothers Big Sisters PEI will find a place for you.

They also have yearly fundrais- ing. Bowl for kids sake, and the Big Brothers Big Sisters yearly cottage draw (I am sure most people have seen their cottage every year by em- pire theatres!)

Cartner said the summertime is when many new friendships are needed most.

“Since school will be out I encour- age many university students to vol- unteer,” she said. “A couple of hours a week can really make a difference in a young child’s life.”
