Moncton Midgets Edge Abbies 4-3 To Capture NB - PEI Championship

SACKVILLE, N.B.. March 29 - (CP) - The Moncton midget Can- ucks captured the N. B.-P. E. 1. mid- get hockey title here tonight as they cked out a 4-3 win over the Char- lottetown Abbies. The game was a sudden-death affair with the win- ner to go against the Nova Scotla. representatives for the Maritime Crown.

The Moncton squad was never headed in the game though the Is- land six were on even terms on two occasions. Moncton got the only goal of the first period and out- scored their opposition 2-1 in the second period to lead 3-1. The Abbles reversed the procedure in the last period to make the final score 4-3.

Dr. Pierce Rink Takes Lead In Local Bonspiel

The rink skipped by Dr. Harry Pierce yesterday took the lead in the prize handicap points bon- spiel at the Charlottetown Cur- ling Club. They amassed a total of 195 points. In second place was the Dr. Wendell MacDonald rink with 183 points. while third place was held by the Frank Hansen rink with 177 points.

The bonspicl, the last major one of this season. will conclude today when the remaining rinks. idle yesterday, play their second games at 4 p.m. and 7 pm.

Harder Now To Piich Three No-Hii Gaines

That's the opinion of Cy Young. the only major leaguer in modern baseball who ever turned the trick.

Cy, who celebrated his 94th l:.......ay today, thinks the game has been changed and that present rules tie down chuckers too much.

He especially dislikes the one- sccond stop between the windup and the throw.

"When a pitcher starts his act- ion he should go through with it. That pause makes it harder on a pitcher's arm," he added.

He also thinks the game is dif- ferent today.

"The fans want to see the ball hit over the fence now," he ex- plained. "And that's what they g '. a. lot of long-ball hitting."

"Before they wanted to see base running and inside-the-pork buc- ball." he added.

Described as a goodwill ex- pedition. it is the first time Rang- ers have gone on a post-season exhibition. They will start off with a tilt against an a-ll-star team from the A-P-C Senior League. The A-P-C team will be weakened by the absence of the circuit-winning outfit, St. F. X. Varsity, which tonight is playing in Quebec against Dolbeau Beav- ers.

The boys here would need to be feeling in fine aha-pc too because the general hockey public in this centre are not giving Islanders very much hope to eliminate the Cape Breton champions. Some quarters here are quoting the Syd- nay club to take the series in four straight, while the more liberal ones are calling Millionaires the winner in six games. Those who think the Islanders will win the series are hard lo find. The ls- landers have other ideas. how- ever, and they really mean busi- ness.

Being the current talk of hoc- key fans everywhere in the Marl- tlmes, there is no doubt about it that it will be a great series, probably the closest that has tak- en placc between the two league champions for a good number of years. They have both made strong showings in their respec- tive circuits that they have pretty well dominated all through the schedule and playoff competitions. They both are well laden with speed, scoring power and favor the wide-open, aggressive style of play.

From what has been seen of the two teams in action against one another in a series of five exhibition tilts during the season, the Sydney club perhaps holds the edge on polished passing and fast breaking attack. while on the other hand the Islanders appear to hold the advantage in hitting power and organized pressure plays that are hard to cope with and have a habit of paying off in goals. There is little difference between the two clubs to the casual observer, but what hold true In exhibition tilts may be far from the mark when they meet in series play for high stakes. . . .

TORONTO. March 29-(CP)-- Boston Bruins and Toronto Maple Leafs added up their in- juries today and neither found much satisfaction in the result.

The Leafs discovered that Al Rollins, their brilliant rookie goalie. won't be able to play

again this season. He suffered a strained knee ligament last night when the Bruins beat the Leafs 2-0 to take a 1-0 lead in their best-of-seven Stanley Cup semi- final.

Coach Lynn Patrick of the Bruins reported that there's some question as to when left wing Vic Lynn will get into action again. The former Leaf has a charley horse. It was an old injury aggravated in last night's hard- checking battle.

Patrick also reported: Steve Kraftcheck, rookie defenceman. hurt his knee; defenceman Max Quackenbush. who went into the game with one sore wrist, came out with two; veteran centre Milt Schmidt's injured knee hasn't improved.

Glad To Have Turk

For the Leafs. the loss of Rollins was softened by the knowledge that old Turk Broda will go back between the goal posts again. At 36, the National Hockey League's oldest active player. the Turk bears the repu- tation of being one of the most effective "money" goalies hockey has known.

One Bright Spot

Patrick found one bright spot in his injury picture. Defence- inan Murray Henderson who missed the opener skated in a light drill the Bruins held today and felt pretty good. lie may be ready by Saturday.

There was elation in they Bos- ion camp over their opening vic- tory over the series favorites. But they don't think it's all settled yet.

"We're very happy to get one game up," said Patrick. "But anything can happen before the series is over-and probably will."

A club doctor diagnosed Rol- llns' injury as of the same type as the one which laid Ted Ken- nedy up for 15 games last sea- son. It is expected that an esti- mate of the length of the con- valescenc the goalie will need will be given in 10 days.

Fla., March E - (AP) - A year ago Bucky Harris astounded the experts by guiding the Washington ”mlsflts," an al- most unanimous pre-season cellar choice, into fifth place in the Am- erican League. It was an accomp- lishment comparable to his winning the pennant with New York Yank- ees ln 1947.

"I won't predict where we'll fin- ish," Harrls says. "But we're going to win more games than we did last year. Let the standings take care of themselves."

The 1950 Nets won (71 games. seven in front of the sixth-place Chicago White Sox but wound up 25 games out of the first division.

"This is an entirely different team than the one that began the 1950 campaign." Bucky said. "We're starting out with Mickey Vernon at first, Cass Michaels at second and Bob Kuzava, Gene Bearden and sanadlio Consuegra on the mound. Not one of them was with us last opening day."

These five, togethe with out- fielders Irv Noren. Sam Mole, Gil Coan, third-baseman Eddie Yost and pitcher Sid Hudson. comprise the Senators' strength.

"It's not an outstanding team." Harris said frankly, "but it is a good defensive club that has some bal- ance. If we get the pitching, we'll be hard to beat."

lively Discussion On Racing Dales

A statement that "Charlottetown wants to take all the racing days from the rest of the Province" brought forth considerable discus- sion in the Legislature yesterday morning during the second reading of a bill designed to prevent the doping of race horses.

The statement was made by Mr. Carrol Delaney, Summersidc, who introduced the amendment which asked that a Commission be ap- pointed to allot racing dates so that other tracks would be sure of get- l-lllg racing cards and that legisla- tion be enacted so that the public could have full confidence in the parl-mutuals. The amendment was ruled out of order by the chairman and was added to the bill.

Mr. R. R. Bell said he was sur- prised to hear the statement of the member from Summerside. Any track could hold a race any day it wanted to, he said. He explained that night races would be held at the Charlottetown track on Wed- nesday and Saturday nights this year but that three Wednesday's would be left open for races at St. Peter's, Covehead and Sourls. Park- vicw had intimated that it would not hold races this year. he added.

He was asked by Hon. A.W. Matheson. about the effect two races in Charlottetown each week would have on other tracks.

Mr. Bell replied that there were 160 horses stabled at the Exhibition Barn last year and at least two night races a week were needed in order to give all horses an oppor- tunity to race. In addition to leav- lng three Wednesday's open for the country tracks they had also left July I open for the Summerslde races, he stated.

Hon. Eugene Cullen asked if he. Mr. Bell. thought it would be good for the horse breeders of the Prov- lnce to hold night races at Chur- lottetown twice a week?

Mr. Bell replied that the Char- lottetown track was always very co-operative with the country tracks and brought the mainland horses here that were used on other tracks as well as their own.

Mr. John MacLean, Souris, urged that something be done to protect the small tracks. Mr. Speaker Phil- lips said that the United States Trotting Association, under which Island tracks are registered, would look after the dates.

The bill itself may provide regu- lations governing inspection at race tracks and prohibiting the admin- istering of harmful drugs to race horses. Any horses found drugged will be barred. A person found guilty under the bill will be liable to a fine of slco or in default of pay- ment a period in prison not ex- ccedlng 30 days. The Act will be en- forced when the Government pro- claims regulations. The day of on- forcement was not announced

TORONTO. March 29-(CP)- Al Rollins. goaltender for Toron- to Maple Leafs. is through for the season as a result of a knee club

injury suffered last night, officials announced today.

The 24-year-old rookie from Vanguard, Sask., who won the Vezlna Trophy as the National Hockey League's top goalie this season, twisted a ligament in his left knee during the first period of last night's Stanley Cup play- off between the Leaf: and Boo- ton Bruns.

The accident occurred when Rollins skated far out of his not to grab a loose puck from Bos- ton's Pete Horeck. The two col- lided and Rollins was forced to retire.
