Licurs Ourt.—The pump in the Royal Electric Light Company's station broke down last evening and the inspirator gave out. Asa result the city was in darkness until the damaged gear was put in working order by one of the men from McKinnon & McLean’s foundry. The street lamps were out from about half past seven until half- past nine, and. the shop lights from about a quarter past eight to a quarter past nine.

Increase IN INSURANCE Rartes.— An im- portant meeting of insurance agents was held here Wednesday. The proposed in- crease in the tariff of rates throughout P. E. Island was discussed. It is under- stood, asa result of the conference, that the rates on all kinds of risks throughout P. E. Island will be increased. Bie Gotp DiscoveRy.— Great excitement prevails in Truro just now in consequence ofa big discovery of gold at Carribou mines, worked by the Truro Gold Mining Company, atout thirty miles from that torn. The present discovery surpasses anything yet discovered in Nova Scotia, and is expected to turn out the biggest and richest gold mine ever opened in Can ada. The first crushing was twenty eigh: tons and yielded over 105 ounces of gold. At a greater depth the next lot showed a mo™ encouraging increase, that yield being 272 ounces from 22 tons of quartz which show: a valu: of $5,091, the total expense off mining and milling net exceeding $700 Ore worth over $1000 per ton 1s coming out and more is being uncovered. This is not a nugget mine as the strike gradually in creases in richness and thickness and show: every indication of continuing to great depths. Many other leads are known by their croppings to intersect the mining

Gannon against Arthur Lully, was’ up for hearing in the | Supreme Court at Halifax on Thursday. Both persons belong to Halifax. The plaintiff ' alleges that Lully promised to marry her, the date being fixéd, -Lully denies it and says he never agreed to marry Mies Gannon and if he did there was no agreement in writing as re. quired by the statute. At the time of the alleged agreement, both parties were infants and the same. is void. The defendant aiso states that the fair one had all her letters re- turned and they mutnally agreed to love each other no more.
