show that in many parts of Ontario root
drouth, In avery small district in the eastern part of the Trovince, the drouth has been of short centinuance, and un- usual crops of all kinds are reported. Elsewhere everything now in the fields is withering. The pastures are burnt brown and the produce of the dairy has greatly fal.ez, Around Loudon, Oat, the cattle are perishing. At Petrolia the ground is cracked into fissures six feet deep.
More threatening than the loss of crops are the extensive bus' fires prevailing in almost every part of the Province. Ou the Lake Huron shore thousands of acres of valuable timber have been destroyed. Iu the Ottawa region, on the Bay of Quinte, up the Treat Valley, and in the Niagara district, the fires ia many places are sweeping trees, fences, crops, and buildings before them, and leaving the ground burat bare. The telegrams from
Lindsay, Omemee, Beaverton, Napanee,
and Arnprior indicate a most serious danger which is vo doubt equalled in mauy other places which have not yet reported. The village of Sandpoiot has bees descroyed. A pall of smoke hangs over the whole Province, and even on the great lakes the danger is great to naviga-
tion on account of the thick atmosphere. |
Even in settled parts far removed from the woods the smoke is present. Tele- grams regarding the heat show that there was not the slightest abatement in the broiling temperature which has been maintained for nearly a week. London reports 99 degrees in the shade; Hemilton, even when eveving had fallen, 99 degrees; and Beaverton a maximum ef 103 degrees in the shade. London adds te heat scarcity of water, the water- works having almost given out. A ter- rific thunder storm is reported from Lon- don and Parkhill, destroying a consider- number of buildings. Though very des- tructive, it is even welcomed by the peo- ple of these neighborhoods, so great has been the drought. American telegrams show a widespried drought of exceeding gravity, and local rains in some local- ities.

Dominion Exhibition Notes.
Ov Halifax exchanges state that large numbers of entries are rushing in from all parts of the Dominion. We clip the following from the Halifax Chronicle of Saturday last:
The Starr Manufac' uringCompany pur’ pose exhibiting some of their interesting machinery in motion, and are preparing a handsome exhibit o/ their manufactured goods.
About seven or eizht hundred entries have been made up to the present time, many of which are large exhibits, and a rush of entries has now set in.
Up to the present time the Ontario people have sent in far the larger number of entries, but it is known that numerous people in the Mariiime Provinces are preparing exhibits which they have not entered yet.
An Ontario earriaze builder has en- tered a carriage valued at $1,500.
The entries of catile are now coming in briskly, and many of the well known Nova Scotia prize herds will be exhibited, but [the Province will find a keen com- petition in this line.
Eatries of horses, cattle and sheep from our Province have also been forwarded, also a number of articles of Provincial industry. The entries for live stcck closes to-day. Other exhibits can be entered up to the 13th inst. We hope that our agriculturists and manufacturers will act their part well, and send in their entries in good time,

Summerside Mails.
Ix reference to tlie queries of our correspondents about Summerside mails, the Assistant Inspector begs to state that the mails are despatched to this office by 6.30 a. m. and 6 p.m. trains. The people of that town must have been sat- isfied with the hours for closing those mails, as they never made any applica- tion here for a chanve; but since the first instaut, a change has been made,and the morniog mail for this city will not close before six o’clock ua the moruing of despatch. ™
If this does not suit «those interested they have only to ask for a further

Canadian Morsss Seized at Vance- boro.

' | Last week a covsignment of eighteen P. |E. 1 working horses, shipped over the St. |John & Maine Railway from St. Jehn, were seized by the eustoms officials at | Vanceboro on the ground of undervaluation. Negotiations have been going on between \the shipper and ewner. Mr. John Stevens, of Boston, for the recovery of the animais, | but they are st ll im durance vile, with jevery prospect of being sold by auction jsoon. Enquiry by the reporter brought out the iact that the horses were shipped from Prince Edwad Island on the 18th ult. From St. John they were shipped for Boston by the Sc. Jehn & Maine Railway, ,and entered at Venceboro upon the value sworn to before the American Consul at Summerside. The duties were paid, on the consular cercificate, by ‘he railway at Van- ceboro, after which,on the ground of under- valuation, the customs officers seized the animals, held them in custody, and then sent them under seal to Bangor. The herses are new atas‘able in Bangor. The horses were entered as worth $50 each, and the custems officials contend they are really worth $159.

Catching Salmon by Machinery.
HOW A FISHING WHEEL SCOOPS UP FISH ON THE COLUMBIA RIVER.
The San Francisco (Cal.) ‘* Bulletin,” in a recent issue says:—i*rom an English gen- tleman who has travelled overland from British Columbia to this city we learn that anew device, which has been patented, is now in operation t kirg salmon on the Columbia River. This device, a machine, is known as “‘ Williams’ patent fishing wheel,” and is located on the Oregon side of the Columbia River, about a mile and a half belew the ca-cades. This device con sists of a jetty of rocks built out from a point on the shore of the river, ouiside of which is a planked sluiceway, to which an undershot wheel with large tank buckets revolves. The sluiceway was built when the river was at its lowest stage of water, and the wheel is hung so that it can be raised or lowered, according io the stage of water. Tne instinct of the salmon is to run up the river alongside of the bank in- stead of mid-channel. By this the fish can take advantage of the eddies below jutting points of land. On these projecting points of land the Ind‘ans have from time immem- orial taken salmon in large quantities with dipnets. The jetty built out from the point above named makes a larger and longer slack water behind it, and the sal- mon rounding the point rush into the slviceway to get up the river. In vie sluice- way the wheel, which revolves in the enr- rent, is gauged so as to sweep within a foot of the bottom, and the salmon are scooped up into the tanks or buckeis, which latier let ont the water as they ascend. On the wheel descenc ing, the fish are thrown out into a trough or gutter below, where they remain until they are taken away to. be canned. The arrangement of the sluice, wheel, etc., is a most successful one, the catch of adult salmon, which are the only ones canned, runuing from 1,500 to 4,000 per day. There is virtnally no expense in taking the fish save attending to the wheel.

The ‘Philadelphia Farmer” says:— Years ayo, when a faster horse than then existed was desirable, there was reason in the attempts te improve the speed of the animal, but there is hardly a doubt that the good of the farmer has been nearly alto- gether lost sight ef in the desire to get horses of great speed. The best farm horse is the strong horse, the one that can step out lively, and bas endurance to go through a day’s work without great fatigue. The business of raising fast horses is altogether distinct from the business of the farmer. It is a source of excitement to see a horse race, but when a farmer thinks the horse he sees racing is the one he ought to have on his farm he makes a mistake.
