The book also contains names of other members, a secret alphabet and ex- tracts from a constitution which binds the members to obey the orders of the officers. Jom Lind, fourteen years old, of Greenfield, Pa., ran away from home on Tuesday. He stepped from a passenger train at Green Ridge next day, in front of a coal train, and war run over and in-

Capt. Vernon Chater, of the Ninety- first Highlanders, who vacated his ap- pointment as A. D. ©. to the Marquis of Lorne in order to join his regiment in Zululand, is to resume his position in Canada.

Mr. John Ryan, the contractor forthe 100 miles of railway from Winnipeg west, expects to have 500 men at work at an early date, and, in accordence with in- structions from the Government, will push on the work with great vigor.

Miss Fletcher, the author of “ Kis- met is twenty three years of age. She lives in Rome, dresses well, and wears blonde hair. Her nom de plume is “George Fleming,” and her friends call her ‘‘ George.’?. She makes lots of money.

The Pope has written au autograph lette tothe Emperor William, summing up thé results of the late negotiations between the Vatican and Germany, and suggesting the Mmperor’s directinter- vention, in the way of clemency, as the only way to re-establish harmony. It is reported that Prince Bismark knew and approved of this step beforehand.

T\vo trains on the third avenue cle- vated railroad in New York came into collision on the 10th inst,, owing to a misplaced switch. The trains were moving slowly fiom the depot at the same time, and going in different direc- tions, and the engines crashed together before they could be stopped. No person was injured, but the engines were badly wrecked. The switchman fled, and has not since been seen.
