Gross, who has a great deal ef ex- perience in prospectiag and packing in the Northwest Territery, was chosen for this mission, he returned today and advis- es that no movement ‘be made till spring when it will be possible to accomplish the | trip with some degree of satisfaction.

Tine men have been made des— perate by their failure to get over the trail and by the hardships they have been com- pelled to endure in the hopeless struggle aga'nst heavy odde. They have become suspicious of one another, and quarrels are frequent. Every man’s hand is raised against every other man. The lawless characters are much in evideuc>, and dissensions and disorders nave broken ont among the miners until such a thing ae co- operation is impossible.

Tbe Territorial Marshal is reported to be getting out a force of deputies to drive the crowds of smugylers and bunco men, out of Skaguay. Thia class bas caused a

great deal of the present trouble at that place.

over the difficulty of an alleged attempt on the part of the anti-aunexetionists to influeuace Senators Morgan and Quay, who are expected Lo arrive here soon on @ tour of investigation, Tnev say that Senators White of California and Thurston of Nebraska, who will lead the fizht against annexation In congress this winter, will also visit Hawaii and attend the mass meetirg of natives, which, it is alleged by the annexationists, has been called for .the purpose of convincing the seaators that the natives bitterly oppose annexation. It is also ulleged that tha mass meeting will be made as dramatic as possible. It is believed that the ex-queen may arrive by the same steamer as the senaiors and. that she will address the people at the same meetings. The second card of anti-an- pexationists will be plaved on the arrival here late in Sep ember of Senator Petti- grew, of South Dakota. Lee of Montana, and Frank Canon of Utah. They are now in Japan and China studying the silver question.

The Campbell Hotel took fire in the rear several times, but the flames were quickly extinguished. The fire looked very serious at one time.
